Saw the matinee today...or at least the first half, since I left at intermission. I started out hating it, but was finding it passable enough by intermission and normally would have stayed. But the guy behind me was coughing, I couldn't tell if he was keeping his face covered or what kind of mask he was wearing, and I wasn't enjoying the show enough to risk it.
- The songs are dreadful.
- The book scenes are fine, though most of them are just directly from, if not outright recreations of, the movie.
- McClure is working his tail off and is quite good, but the character starts out so unlikable he spends most of the first act trying to dig out of it. I don't know if there was a different way to introduce him to make him sympathetic (and that courtroom song didn't do it), but instead it's just...no, he's awful; she's completely right to leave him; and now he's yelling at his kids about her; and now he's lying and committing fraud.... Williams may have had a sweetness or cuddliness to his persona that made it easier to not hate him, but McClure doesn't have it here. The character's just a dick. The second act had some heavy lifting to overcome that.
- Casey Garvin is a very good-looking man. I had seen others mention him being it in, which didn't mean anything to me since I didn't know who he was, but when he had his entrance, I was immediately like, "Who. Is. That???" It was enough to forgive the dubious English accent. Was almost tempted to stick around solely to see more of him.
- The ensemble looked like they were having a good time, which is what I enjoyed the most. It was almost enough to make me think maybe I was too. The lyrics are mediocre at best, but the music in the big Make Me a Woman number and the cooking number was fun and energetic enough and the ensemble was selling it and seemed like they were having a blast. All I was looking for was something light and fun in these terrible times. Those two numbers and the ensemble's work in them was the closest to delivering that.

Score is rather forgettable....

As someone who enjoyed the show more than expected, the score is sadly forgettable. I’ve had one song (Pretend) stuck in my head and can’t remember a note from any others. Except the one that was literally the Omelet number from Something Rotten with new lyrics.
But I would listen to a cast album if it happens. I tend to have music grow on me.

I'm wondering if they've done any further work on the show during this hiatus, or if the Opening Night version of the show is still the "final," frozen version?
