Macy and Butz to Succeed Piven in SPEED-THE-PLOW

"Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz and Academy Award nominee William H. Macy will succeed Jeremy Piven in the acclaimed Broadway revival of David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.

As previously reported, Emmy Award winner Piven abruptly departed the acclaimed revival of Speed-the-Plow, citing high levels of mercury. Playwright Mamet told Daily Variety Dec. 17, "I talked to Jeremy on the phone and he told me that he discovered that he had a very high level of mercury. So my understanding is that he is leaving show business to pursue a career as a thermometer."

In a Dec. 18 statement the play's producers said, "We have been advised by Jeremy Piven's medical representatives that he is seriously ill and is unable to fulfill his contractual obligation to Speed-the-Plow. Consequently, he has left the production ten weeks early."

Butz, a Tony winner for his work in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, will assume the role of Bobby Gould Dec. 23 and play through Jan. 11, 2009. Stage and screen star Macy will play Gould Jan. 13-Feb. 22, 2009. Drama Desk Award winner Jordan Lage will play the role through Dec. 21. (Macy's wife, Emmy winner Felicity Huffman, succeeded Madonna in the role of Karen in the original Broadway production of Speed-the-Plow.)..."

Wow. Now I'm going to have to invest in seeing this twice.

How to properly use its/it's: Its is the possessive. It's is the contraction for it is...

I don't know if this will help ticket sales in the long run, but I'm sure a lot of Broadway fans will be going back and seeing this two more times to see both of them.

Talk about cramming. Butz only given 6 days to learn everything. I know it happens here and there, but wow!!
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

This is up-lifting. Thank goodness for the will-power of the show's producers and the go-get'em attitude of Butz and Macy. I was shrugging-off Plow with the announcement of Piven's departure, but am actually MORE inclined to attend now.

Bless Lage, Esparza and Moss for rolling with the punches.

Oh wow, I want to see this again. I have to admit I did like Piven in it, but he wasn't 'irreplaceable' like Esparza is. I cant decided who to see it again with Macy or Butz. I'd see it twice more, but frankly I dont love the story THAT much. Rather catch one of the 15 closing in January again.

Well this just made my morning so much better. Someone on another thread mentioned Macy yesterday as a possibility, so I was already imagining it. But to have it confirmed makes me so much happier. Random question - are they any promo codes available that might cover the show near the end of its run? I really want to see this when I go to New York, but I'm there the 13th - 2nd and the best code I can find expires Feb. 1. Thanks.

Mormonophobic- If you are a student and show up around box office opening hours you should be able to get a student ticket. (I think its 26 or 27 bucks).
Otherwise PLaybill.com has an offer here: http://www.playbill.com/club/offers/offer_detail/2120.html

If you arent registered on the site already, do it and you'll get discount codes for shows.

Funny how, in any other real world circumstance, nobody would have ever thought about Butz and Macy up against each other for the same part!

Kinda makes you wonder why one of them wasn't offered the role to begin with? Certainly two better choices IMHO!

This is the kind of new I love. Piven was okay, but Esparza really did it for me. Now I have a good excuse to see this again -- twice, in fact. God bless Butz and Macy for coming to the rescue!!!!!!!

re: Macy and Butz to Succeed Piven in SPEED-THE-PLOW

Very few circumstances would have inspired me to pay the amount of money I just did for crappy mezz seats. Seeing Norbert Leo Butz and Raul Esparza in the same show is definately on that list.

I cannot wait for Macy! One of my all-time favorite actors! He is finally going to get me to see this show!
