Yea, I was wondering, are basically all performances lip synced? I would like to think some were genuine, but the majority look pretty bad.
jdtp, yes, they are all lip-synced. While many of the performers could handle singing live, it is just more practical for the broadcast and on the whole to have performances pre-recorded.
All of the parade performances are (badly) lip-synced.

"I hate Memphis and have no interest in seeing it ever. However, today's performance was actually not terrible, like it usually is."
You hate Memphis, though you never saw it?? lmao Kindergarden!

I missed the Billy Elliot performance on CBS, what did they perform?
I wasn't blindly saying "I hate it" even though I've never seen it. Perhaps I should have been clearer: I hate the songs that I have seen, and the performances that I have seen. Thus, I have no interest in seeing it. Maybe saying "I hate it, but haven't seen it was a little unclear."

About 10 of the ballet-class students, along with Billy & Michael, performed "Expressing Yourself". It was, I believe, pre-taped in a dance studio.

thanks!
The CBS numbers are, I believe, always pre-taped. Last year the cast of Ragtime sang at the Statue of Liberty (or rather, at a park, with the Statue in the background).

I think it was last year, maybe two, but when Mary Poppins performed on CBS, it was phenomenal. They used a lot of magic, and danced through Bryant Park.
CBS always picks awesome locations.
Since the performances are pre-recorded is it safe to assume that the Broadway track of "Good Riddance" might be floating around on-line?
PiraguaGuy2, while MEMPHIS has performed "Steal Your Rock 'n' Roll" on television before, they certainly don't do it for "every" performance.
They performed a medley of "Underground" and "Memphis Lives in Me" on The View, and they performed "Someday" for one of their performances on The Today Show.
How could American Idiot perform one of their more "high-octane numbers" when the show's rowdiest songs are, well, less than patriotic? "Don't wanna be an American idiot" and "subliminal mindf*ck America" aren't exactly Hallmark holiday cheer. Good Riddance is really the only number that can be construed as "jaunty."
I know they're paid well, but still, those poor kids. Libby Winters looked freezing.
I think Liza and Andy Williams were the only ones who did not lip-sync. True pros.
CATSNYrevival, I don't know if this addresses your question (and you may already know about it), but you can download each night's performance of "Good Riddance" here:

Part of the reasoning for lip-syncing is the unpredictable weather conditions. Cold winds can do terrible things to vocal chords and the sound produced under those conditions is less than pleasing.
^ Dont forget the nightmare that it would be to try and mic that many people for each performance. And the uncertainty that goes along with live performance. All they need is for some actor to say a naughty word and they'd get letters by the bag full. Pre-recording is a plus.
This was the tamest, lamest group of numbers ever on the parade.
And doing that Johnny Cash number with the lyrics "I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die...." is certainly great for the kiddies, isn't it?
And the number FOR the kiddies from Elf looked like it was something from the Carol Burnet show (but they would have done it better.)
Contrast that morceau de turde with Supercalifragilistic from Mary Poppins and there is no comparison.
