I can see Travolta as Corny Collins! HARVEY is EDNA.
Who else wants HARVEY AS EDNA?

Posted: 3/3/06 at 10:08amTravolta is a film star, who can sing and dance, and it makes no sense to cast him in a such an ancillary role.

Posted: 3/3/06 at 10:11amHarvey is not a movie box office draw. Do you want the film to do well, or do you want a recreation of what you already saw on stage? Rent and The Producers used most of their original casts and tanked. Travolta will get a lot of attention for doing Edna drag, and get more seats in the theatre. So quit complaining about it, because this choice is probably better for the long term potential of the film. I adore Harvey, but his performance is too big to work on film. The audience will have an easier time seeeing a familiar performer like Travolta in the role.

Posted: 3/3/06 at 10:15amAnd Divine's performance as Edna wasn't big for the screen? I just don't picture Travolta as Edna.

Yes but this isn't a remake of the movie, it is an adaptation of the musical which is much more tame.
Travolta may be wrong in some people's eyes, but Harvey isn't the right choice either, from a money standpoint. I say, complain about him after the film comes out. There are plenty examples on this board where people complained about a performer being cast (oddly enough the biggest one was when everyone thought Harvey was wrong for Tevye) and ended up eating their words.
We lucked out with The Producers and Rent, but after those two bombs, are producers really going to rely on the original casts to seel tickets? I think not.

Since when has John been a "box office draw"

He can get a movie a lot of attention, and though he has had bombs, he has had many many hits. Many more box office hits than Harvey (again, who I love).

Posted: 3/3/06 at 10:27amJust because you cast Harvey doesn't mean it will be a recreation of what you saw on stage. The Producers basically used most of the important principals that appeared on the Broadway stage with the exception of Uma Thurman and Will Ferrell. In order for a "recreation" to happen, wouldn't that mean casting most of the original cast members like the Producers? Besides, for all we know, Harvey could become more of a "box office draw" if he was cast as Edna. And you say that casting John Travolta will help in the long run, but did casting Uma and Will in the Producers help? No.

Posted: 3/3/06 at 10:30amTravolta is a safe choice. The red states are likely to find him easier to handle in drag than an actual homosexual in the role. I'd love to see Harvey in the film, but it just isn't a realistic choice.

Travolta is not gay.
Oh lord Corine, sweetie. Let it go. It's going to happen, so you might as well get over it, and save yourself the headache. Go to Vegas and see Harvey and Dick. Oh, and go see Hairspray too.

Posted: 3/3/06 at 10:34amI think Donny Osmond, not Travolta, should play Corny. Can't see Travolta in any of the roles frankly.
#12re: Make Travolta Corny Collins
Posted: 3/3/06 at 10:34amDonny Osmond makes me so very happy. Is that wrong?

Do you want the film to do well, or do you want a recreation of what you already saw on stage?
Yeah, but your implying in that quote saying that casting Harvey would be a "recreation." I'm not saying anything against Travolta being cast...he may do well for the film, he may not. Again, Uma and Will are big names, but the movie flopped. I'm not sure if Chicago financially flopped or made a very small profit, but Catherine Zeta Jones, Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere, and Queen Latifah are all pretty big names. So, is Travolta really a "safe choice" to contribute to the success of the film? And maybe Harvey wouldn't be that big box office draw, but obviously these other actors weren't either based on how much money the movies made. How can Harvey not be "realistic"? I'd say he's pretty realistic...just his talking voice alone cracks me up.

Posted: 3/3/06 at 10:39amTravolta's peccadilloes are well known in Hollywood. He is neither subtle nor careful. I think he'll be great in this role if he goes all out -- so to speak. I look forward to the casting of Tracee and Wilbur.

How about Ewan McGregor as Corny Collins?

How about Ewan McGregor in my bedroom every night for the rest of our lives? Because that I could certainly live with

I forgot that BATTLEFIELD EARTH was such a hit! Thanks for reminding me.
Travolta is the biggest box office draw since Ron Glass!

Posted: 3/3/06 at 11:14ami think rather highly of ron glass but i'm probably the only person on this board who knows who he is without the aid of IMBD.

Posted: 3/3/06 at 11:16amSmaxie - you forgot to mention that the movie has already cast Travolta. "Petitioning" now for him to be another role is a bit - how shall we say - futile.
#23re: Make Travolta Corny Collins
Posted: 3/3/06 at 11:17amYeah, cause petitions always change producers' minds. Is there a case where a Broadway themed petition actually worked?
#24re: Make Travolta Corny Collins
Posted: 3/3/06 at 11:18amYes.. you'll notice that Ashton Kutcher didn't play Max Bialystock. And they listened to my petition with only 1 signature!
