"The next Hairspray" was mentioned several times.
Now, I like Hairspray, and I think I'll like Princesses, but definitely not into this musically styled show again and again and again.

Posted: 8/17/05 at 11:29amIt looks like its going to stink especially the songwriting. It actually seems like a cheap high school production. This looks nothing like the Little Princess, its like the Little Princess skanked and hip-hopped out. I wish they would've just done a true adaptation of LP, I would've actually wanted to see that Updated On: 8/17/05 at 11:29 AM

This needs a bump so more people can see. This was a really good clip. Although for me it seems like in dialogue and dance they are trying way to hard to be "hip" and capture teens...but in doing so only capture how adults think teens act.

Posted: 8/17/05 at 4:05pmI want to see it b/c it's an original musical but I'm not too high on it right now. It sounds way too pop, I don't like that. But thank goodness for Brent Barrett!

Posted: 8/17/05 at 4:08pmI don't see success in the future for this one (not that I don't want to see it succeed), but who knows. It just seems too "Bring it On-y" for broadway. Great Video though.

the thing about public relations is that they are only going to show people who liked it. those people may have even worked for the theater or their kid might be in the show.
most of the girls sound good, the dancing was a little scary
the boy in the black tank was a little scary and that scene looked a little risque, but who knows

A lot of that show looks like a pop music video...not a good sign. It'll be popular though. That's for sure.

Posted: 8/18/05 at 2:05amI hate when older people try to make music that they think teens will like because it just comes off as cheap poppy crap. Although, some of the songs sounded alright. The only person who urked me was the kid in the black tank top. I didn't understand his boyband-ish dancing. Seemed like he wanted to dance, but yet he couldn't. I'm not sure how all previews do, but it seems like there was a huge turn out for this show, looked pretty sold out. I'm excited to see how this does. I think most critics will rip it because its pop music and for some reason people hate pop music.

Mind you this is a Broadway tryout and they're almost always packed at least the first couple of nights. We probably saw opening night or something. There's always a buzz around that anyway. It has time until opening on Broadway. Who knows it could be a totally different show.

I really want to be supportive of new musicals, but frankly, based on these lengthy clips, I have to say it looks pretty bad. The lyrics were very symplistic--rhyming one-syllable words with one-syllable words, and the music all sounds like generic pop. The plot also sounds pretty screwy--since when do adults take on starring roles in high school shows?
Regardless though, let me say that Brent Barrett has an AWESOME voice.

Posted: 8/18/05 at 7:36amI saw the show last week and while I liked it Hairspray it isn't. The script is funny(Cheri and Bill Steinkellner,of Cheers), the comedy songs worked well, but the others, while serviceable, didn't knock it out of the ballpark for me. Brent Barrett(the 21st century Howard Keel) and Donna English are terrific. With some tinkering it should come in ready to compete for the Hairspray/Wicked demographic. The audience LOVED it.

Sorry but it just screams "CHEESE" to me. I could write better music and lyrics than that

I wouldn't pay money to see this show.
I hate it when people fail at taking pop culture and trying to translate it into a good musical. This type of pop culture doesn't translate well for me. I only think that the Trio song about the girls playing boys all the time, is very clever. Other than that I wouldn't waste my time.

Posted: 8/21/05 at 3:19pmeven though public relations obviously will play up the postive feedback from the audience, I've been twice and can honestly the audience really did like it and were quite enthusiastic both times.
re: Making Of Princesses video#22
Posted: 8/21/05 at 9:31pmSparkling Diamond is right - the audiences are really feeling this show - and this is in a huge theater - like 2000 seats. Big laughs and some songs and moments that literally stop the show. There's a lot to root for on that stage.

Not intereseted at all... and I'm sure that they are probably trying to reach my age group. I think it looks stupid and not well-written. I don't like this musical because it doesn't seem like something I would enjoy. I didn't like anyone's voice in this musical... it is VERY different than Hairspray. Hairspray actually had things to be learned from their musical, and this show looks just like a cheap shot. I'm trying to be supportive of all the new musical... but I'm discouraged by this clip. Hairspray was a fun musical with songs in all the right places, great actors, characters, and an awesome set... and this doesn't seem to have anything. The boy in the black tank top is so ridiculous and the whole "pop music" would not sit well with me. It's definitely NOT as good as Hairspray... and I agree with Broadwaybettini when she says she wouldn't pay money to see this show... because I wouldn't either

Thanks for the clip! After watching that though, I'm still not convinced that it'll be a great show. It certainly didn't sway me to get on the next plane and fly to Seattle or NYC just to see it.
I agree that the lyrics and score was pretty simplistic, and in some instances, cheesy. I hope that they'll do some revisions before opening on Broadway. I've always adored Brent Barrett though! :)
As of now, does not even come close to Hairspray.
