This Is the Moment may be a great "Ballad, but don't use it for an audition, it's overdone and over-used, lol.....However, for a concert, or if you're actually in the show it's a fun song!

Posted: 8/28/05 at 11:25pm"You Should Be Loved" from Side Show is a great power ballad, I don't remember whether it is sung by a tenor or a baritone, but it is really powerful. Also "Why God, Why" and "Buidoui"(sp???) from Miss Saigon.

ahh!! sorry... I did spell it wrong. *goes to fix, and does so* I didn't even notice... must look more carefully next time. Thanks for all these.. but can I get sheet music for ALL of these songs? and where can I find ranges? as in lowest note-highest note? and do most of them have recordings?

yes - you can get sheet music for ALL of these songs
yes - you can get recordings for ALL of these songs
the ranges vary, but it seems that a general tenor theme is omnipresent. expect to sing from about a d below middle c to a bflat or c # above middle c.
the ranges will obviously be obvious when you obvisouly by the sheet music
lol
oh - and whoever suggested 'run freedom, run'; that is SO not a powerful ballad! it is a comical spoof with riffs in a tenor's upper register, it is not even the slightest bit emotive. it's just...loud.

Posted: 8/29/05 at 12:12pmOkay... I have recordings for a lot of these songs, and can get them for most of the ones I don't have... however... I can't find a recording for Waiting for the Moon. It shows nothing on IBDB either.. so did it have a Broadway run? and was it successful? That's the only one I can't find ANYTHING on. THank you all so much for all of this information.

Posted: 8/29/05 at 2:22pmI love This Nearly Was Mine. How about No Other Love, from Me and Juliet? There are so many great ballads out there - if you want a beautiful, really beautiful song that doesn't need belted, try "A Fellow Needs a Girl" from Allegro - when I did it in class, everyone was crying by the end - its just very simple and very sweet.

Posted: 8/29/05 at 5:11pmI don't know if anyone's said this but maybe "Why" from Tick, Tick Boom. My friend sang that at my theatre camp and I almost cried because he sang it really well and acted it really well and it's a powerful song. The song should be sung by a tenor.

Okay, so this is kind of related to tenors, but whatever, it was brought up on this thread.
People constantly say to be considered a tenor you have to sing a high C... yet most tenor roles on Broadway go up to a high Ab... maybe high A, depending on the role. Now, I realize there's exceptions, but the majority of roles don't require that kind of tenor. In opera they do, but not in musical theatre.
I'm curious to find out from people what roles require that extremely high register for tenors (being one myself).
I realize this is a total thread-jack, but if I opened up my own thread, people would say "There's already a thread on this."

Sigh...
Seriously, If I hear the arguement that you have to be able to sing High C's to play tenor roles on Broadway, I will scream.
VERY rarely is there any role that you have to consistantly sing High C's. I can only think of a few roles that actually need you to sing a High C - that being Judas in JCS, Beadle Bamford in Sweeney Todd, and Pirelli in Sweeney.
Most Tenor roles require you to sing up to either a High A or a High B at the extreme...but the most common high notes are around High A or Bb.
You are so right to distinguish the requiements for singing for Musical Theatre and Opera. High C's are more common in Operatic Tenor roles, but even, then is not as EXTREMELY common, as you think.
Furthermore, it would be great to be able to sing a solid High C, as a tenor, but there are different categories of tenors in the operatic classifications too, that have various range requirements....so the point of being able to sing High C's to be a true-blue tenor is ridiculous.
That is all.

I'm a lyric baritone, or bari-tenor, and there are very few musical theatre songs that I cant get out. One that comes to mind is Freddy in Chess, as he does wail a few high c's , as does also Piangi in Phantom. Of course that is closer to opera, than musical theatre anyhow. I kind of top out on Love Cant Happen, which is an A. I also laugh when so many people say they crank out b's and c's on this site. I'm like, um full voice? Falsetto= not the same thing...lol. Doesnt everybody have like an 9 inch penis on the internet as well?

Ditto. The number of times i've argued over this on this board is frustrating.
Thanks for some good common sense Balladeer.

Judas (as well as Jesus) goes higher than a C. In his "Judas' Suicide" he sings an above the staff E natural. "I don't know how to LOVE him." There were many men singing high Cs and higher in Good Vibrations - principals and chorus.
You certainly don't need high C's to be a tenor on B'way, but it does happen.

True Judas and Jesus do occasionally go above a High C, but that is often done in rock falsetto, (if the Judas and Jesus have sense) and in falsetto. To try and belt those high D's and E's = screaming, which is not good for vocal health. I have heard so many horror stories about guys screwing up their voices playing Judas because the feel they have to scream High D's and Es above the staff. That is moronic. I did forget about Freddy....but how often is Chess done?
You said guys were singing High C's consistantly in Good Vibrations in the ensemble? Was it in full voice of falsetto? I haven't seen the show. Just curious. That would be very interesting indeed if they were belting out C's eight times a week in the ensemble.
Cheers,

GV - Sometimes mixy, sometimes full belt. I'm specifically remembering Wouldn't It Be Nice.
JC Superstar - you would sound like an IDIOT doing anything up there in falsetto. There are ways of singing up there without shreading yourself. Listen to any recording of Pity The Child.
