Is anyone else but me terrified that "Mamma Mia!" will suffer a similar fate to "Speed Racer" and be a box office tank? "The Dark Knight" will clearly demolish it in opening weekend, but does anyone else think that it will manage to hang on through the weeks, as "Hairspray" did?
hey, I'm QUITE excited for this film. so sue me. lol
Is it opening opposite Batman??? Yikes... NOT a smart move.
Opening against a dumb, mindless action film WOULD be a good idea, but Dark Knight has very broad appeal, and more "substantial" and noteworthy (acclaimed director, high-cred cast, sad and well-known backstory) than the typical "superhero" film.
Yeah, I really hoped they would open alongside "Get Smart", but apparently, the producers aren't that smart.
pun!
I think the producers were looking at "Let's open it around the same time Hairspray cam out, they really made money"
Did Batman announced when it would before Mamma Mia did or after..cause if it was before, it might have been a bad move..

"It's an example of movie counter-programming, a skill that has become increasingly important as the number of major studio releases swells."

The idea behind it is counter-programming, reaching a female audience when a huge, supposedly male-oriented movie is opening.
I'm not sure this is a terribly good idea, in this case. I think there are lots of females interested in The Dark Knight, especially, I hate to say it, but it's true, after Heath Ledger's death.

Scary - beatcha to it
In this case, I think the demo break they're shooting for is in age, not gender.

Ooh, you did. By THAT MUCH.
I think it's a little of both--I mean, I think Mamma Mia's ads and such are definitely playing to a female crowd. But I guess there will be a lot higher percentage of teenagers going for TDK.
Just judging from the ads and the trailers I'd say that this movie is definetley pandering to a female audience. Opening the same weekend as The Dark Knight probably isn't the smartest move since TDK is one of, if not the most anticipated movies of the summer even before Heath Ledger's death, which only propelled interest even higher. Dark Knight will certainly open at #1 that weekend, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see how Mamma Mia's box office fares.
I don't know which one I'm going to see first, but it may be TDK since I'm seeing Mamma Mia mainly for Meryl and I'm not a big ABBA fan.

The Dark Knight has had July 18th as a release date for practically a full year now, so yeah. Bad move on Mamma Mia's part.
If you ask me, I think an late June release date would've been smarter for the producers rather than mid to late July. There's not that many films slated for release in June, or at least ones that are not much competition.

I know their trying to latch onto Hairspray's audience, but Hairspray's main competition it's opening weekend was the crude I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, which was really only trying to get the male audience. But Batman is one of the most beloved action heros not to mention the new movie sports an all star cast and is a sequel to a critically acclaimed reboot of the franchise. I also feel that Mamma Mia doesn't have the teen draw that Hairspray got by simply casting Zac Efron. I have serious doubts about this film.

MAMMA MIA will open well enough and grow by word of mouth (as, indeed, did HAIRSPRAY); THE DARK KNIGHT will open very big and then drop off quickly week by week.
If you come to Australia you will see Mamma Mia one week earlier on the 10th of July.
Did we forget that "Hairspray" opened the same weekend of the latest "Harry Potter" movie?
Yet...it survived.

Actually Hairspray was released the 20th of July and Harry Potter was released on the 11th. Hairspray also did have an advantage vs. Harry Potter, because the second week of the films release, book 7 came out and that caused a large week 2 drop because it's target audience was busy reading the book.
I think the film will do well in the U.S., but the big revenues will come from the International markets. Europe, Japan and Australia audiences, where ABBA were HUGE, will rush in droves to see it ! And I know it will be a SMASH Hit in Greece, like all movies shot here LOL (The show's International Tour Is playing right now till mid-June here and is doing massive business)
