"Streep Eyes Mamma Mia! Sequel"
2 December 2008 11:23 PM, PST | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news
Veteran actress Meryl Streep is keen to bring movie musical Mamma Mia! back to the big screen for a second time - but only if movie bosses can "get those fabulous boys back".
Streep starred in the Abba-inspired summer hit alongside Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard - who all threw themselves into the singing and dancing roles.
And Streep would love to reunite the cast for a follow-up.
She says, "Grand Mamma Mia! I like it! I'm up for doing a sequel, as long as you can get those fabulous boys back! It's so gratifying it has been this phenomenon around the work. It says there's an audience for something that appeals to a lot of women, something that might make them some money too."
Movie musical Mamma Mia! has become a major box office smash internationally, grossing more than $559 million (GBP375 million) worldwide.
What do you guys think?

Ehh I'd prefer it not to happen. But PLEASE do NOT bring back Pierce Brosnan!!
Haven't they exhausted the worthwhile songs in ABBA's songbook?
Instead ABBA for the sequel maybe they can tackle Queen, no wait ... Meatloaf!
Meryl says she's open to it, but there's been no talk from the creative teams nor producers.
Unless it contains original music, I DOUBT it will happen.
Why? This is even more pointless than making a sequal to Hairspray.
I'm thinking Hollywood shouldn't be allowed to make movie musicals anymore. The world has yet to see a musical sequel that wasn't rubbish (although I hear good things about HSM3, that franchise is hardly a sterling example of how wonderful musicals can be), whereas Hollywood is terrified of doing things without sequel potential because they want easy guaranteed money.
So... either write original movie musicals, a la the HSM franchise, that can easily have sequels because they've allowed and planned for it, or just stop making movie musicals until they come to terms with the fact that not everything HAS to have a sequel.
The writers have been threatening UK audiences with the possibility of a stage sequel for the last 2 years

Not at all! They've only scratched the surface. This is one musical sequel I wouldn't mind seeing produced. The original story was fluff, so fans of Mamma Mia probably would be expecting something along the same lines. It's not like the entire story hinged on an important issue or definitive ending like Hairspray. The ending of Mamma Mia actually lends itself to a sequel so, why not? They could call it "Love Isn't Easy".
^^^ Agree
I was an ABBA fan before Mamma Mia was a hit.
ABBA has over 100 singles. And mished mashed singles that were never released.
the Show of Mamma Mia basically took only the singles that made the charts. (US, Great Britain, Australia)
But before I even would wish for a sequel. There better be a damn good plot. Not the hunky doory storyline that there is now.
But if Mamma Mia shines with a bad story. What will happen if they come up with a Great story.
Lord knows I would watch Meryl Streep in ANYTHING but I hope this doesn't happen. For me, the movie was perfect as it was. I hope they don't do a sequel -- of course I'm open to hear potential ideas to see if it might work, but I'm still on the "no" camp.
Maybe Hairspray and Mamma Mia could mix up the whole shebang and call it Mamma Hairspray!
Sophie & Tracey meet up in London when they are dumped by their boyfriends (who fall in love with each other)....
They call their mothers for help who fly to London to help them take the music scene by storm....
(Yeah so the years don't match up but still....)

I wouldn't mind a "Mamma Mia! sequel on stage as long as it is done well, not sure about a movie. The twist at the end bugged me because it made me want to know what happens next.
