Posted: 3/18/07 at 11:19amI love Hairspray, but when this year has the best summer in years planned and the weekend Hairspray opens is the weekend Harry Potter and Simpsons Movie opens, so I'm a little nervous box office-wise.

Marc, great to see you posting. You've been absent as of late.
I can't wait for this movie to come out. Will it be premiering in Baltimore?

Travolta-momma is pretty fabulous. (and I say this without seeing the whole thing) He is very much in touch with his feminine side.
In a recent interview John said that he played Edna as if she was a 100lb woman.
I'd say his portrayl is more sensitive and passive than stage Edna's but when its time to get down, she gets down.

I am glad the screening went well. This is a great film, with great singes and talent.
I loved John Travolta and Chris Walken in their respective roles.
As for Harvey I love him too...saw him in the show here in Las Vegas. But I do not like to compare actors in the same role.
Travolta is great in the role and I know many media at ShoWest were surprised. Some whom do not like musicals loved seeing him in the clips that were shown.
One person talked about Devine from the original film as I doubt he ever saw the live stage production.
It wowed the media at ShoWest. I know many of them and to hear them talk about the show the way they did was amazing.
Congrats on a successful screening here.
Yours,
Carolyn

Carolyn,
Thanks for all you have said about the SHOWEST presentation. But with the added bonus of all them people singing live, I was still nervous about the following night, where no live performance would goose the reaction.
But, I must admit, the entire film getting such an incredible response at the preview the next night made me almost allow myself to get...well...excited!!!
And if people liked what they saw of Travolta at the SHOWEST presentation, they will love the whole film, for we didn't show any Travolta musical moment at the presentation you saw.
See you in July!!

I am sure if you had added a Travolta musical performance the audience would have died. :) So it's good you kept them in waiting.
The only Travolta singing bit I've seen so far was at the B-hills footage screening during the small glimpse at W260's when Tracy and Edna run out of Hefty. That was fun.
btw Marc, I love the added lyrics and music bits.

That is what was so amazing is that we did not hear Travolta sing...that was fine as what I like about the mom & pop in HAIRSPRAY is the characters. The numbers are good, but the characters are fantastic! I hated when they decided to close the show here as it was such fun.
When I asked Chris Walken if he would ever do a musical a few years back when he won a ShoWest award he said he would like to. I was so excited to see that he was in HAIRSPRAY. I think he has taken that role and with Travolta the two are great.
I can't wait to see the whole film. The opning number had me going.
The fellow I am talking about is a big Travolta fan, but of his action films. He is not one to like musicals. So when he came over to me and said WOW! I knew the film was one he would want to see after he could not stop talking about it.
Glad I got to see what I did at ShoWest.
Yours,
Carolyn

"the weekend Hairspray opens is the weekend Harry Potter and Simpsons Movie opens"
Is this true? If so, why couldn't they find a better weekend to open on? Those two movies' openings are certain to eclipse the opening of Hairspray.
EDIT: Nevermind. Jut looked it up. Harry Potter opens the weekend before; The Simpsons Movie opens the weekend after.

Mr./Ms. StickToPriest, glad you cleared up that HARRY POTTER/SIMPSONS release date statement. I was about to write in and saw you beat me to it.
Isn't it odd how people state things as if they are facts?
Anyway, it IS still a VERY scary time to release a movie. SO many blockbuster possibilities. SCARY!
I just hope you all won't obsess over the different colors of Penny's dress in the 3rd scene and stuff like that! But even if you do, I hope you go see it 10 times to confirm all the differences that aggravate you!!
In fact, if you go see it 20 times, you'll catch even more variations to vent about!

Posted: 3/18/07 at 2:34pmThis summer will be huge for the movies. But it seems like New Line has picked the right weekend. Sandwiched inbetween Harry and Homer feels like a good spot for Tracy to get the ball rolling to a big box office.

Posted: 3/18/07 at 3:14pmI know it's far from the point of the film, but I'm excited to see Pfeiffer back on screen. We don't get to see much of her anymore - and I have a feeling she'll be a riot in this role.

They... seemed to have had no problem watching a "break into song" musical at all
Good. Perhaps this will usher in a wave of musicals that aren't embarrassed by the fact they are musicals.
And I'm with you, DG. I can't wait to see Michelle Pfeiffer on screen again.
