re: Margo on The GREAT Mme. Suzanne Somers

Saw the show for free with wife, liked it. Thought Margo's review was dead-on, though. Great job!

I was disappointed that she gave a very brief reference to her "Three's Company" time.

Just saw an ad for the show on a NJ Transit bus we passed on the NJ Turnpike yseterday!

re: Margo on The GREAT Mme. Suzanne Somers

maybe Suzanne's whole Bwy venture is simply "oneupsmanship" since Joyce DeWitt is getting ready to play Mama Rose at Bucks County Playhouse.

re: Margo on The GREAT Mme. Suzanne Somers

Margo's the first reviewer to offer such harrowingly lavish details of the "If I Only Had a Brain" debacle. (I coulnd't fathom it until I read this account.) Thank you. How instructive.

What is mind-numbing is how such a moment remained. Many bad ideas come up in development, in reherasal. Usually the nature of the collaboration is such, at least one person ascertains how unplayable, or unworkable a risk-taking moment turns out to be. Here, something utterly tasteless and SNL-worthy went undetected by everyone watching. Isn't that fact alone fascinating? Talk about having blinders on.

In a way, the remark about Iraq explains the tawdry "..brain" moment. To this team, and La Somers herself, all imagery is fair game for her meat grinder approach to self-exploitation. From The Wizard of Oz to Iraq carnage, the context was irrelevant, so long as she could incorporate them to "explain" herself. The evolving celebrity ego clearly devours everything. Maybe this show will be a cautionary tale. Probably not.

re: Margo on The GREAT Mme. Suzanne Somers

the Bucks County mention is an apt one.

For years, celebrities like Ms. Somers could tour in stock, and/or appear in regional productions, and make some money. Then this trend of autobiography started. She has overcome much and deserves credit. But i'd rather see her murder something like APPLAUSE, or passably do a Neil Simon play, than try to make musical theatre fit the bizarre journey of her life.

At least DeWitt is brave enough to take on a character (even if some find it not a great fit) rather than impose her own personality as a leading role.

Sueleen,

There was no Q&A after the show last night. I had braced myself to stay for one, but after a half-hearted, semi-standing ovation, Somers disappeared, the lights came up and the ushers cleared the house.

As usual, Margo, a fantastic review.

Strangely enough, though, I'm disappointed I will have missed that. I've always had a tiny, guilty pleasure of a fondness for Somers. Plus, I love a good trainwreck!

Glad u agreed with me on this one Margo, though I knew U would.
There was some rambling the other day on how we should respect her and her courage.
I saw or heard nothing that deserved my respect on that stage.
If she "picks herself up, dusts herself off" and gets off the Brooks I will at least Thank Her.

I enjoy a good trainwreck as much as anyone. I just object to having to pay $100 to watch one.

baddadnpa,

NOBODY in that audience paid anywhere near $100 to see this show. The vast majority (probably around 80% according to last week's figures) were comped in for free via the various papering services. The rest either got $30 rush tickets or $45 tickets from TKTS. There's a reason her average ticket price last week was $11.

"For years, celebrities like Ms. Somers could tour in stock, and/or appear in regional productions, and make some money. "

I'm happy to say that the new Water Tower Drury Lane Theatre in Chicago is bringing back this tradition (Or still hanging on to it, perhaps?) as they mount their second production, Katherine Helmond in "Mornings at Seven." I was sadly too young to see the greats of the genre back in the 60's but sometimes fantasize about seeing Totie Fields in Camelot or Paul Lynde as the Music Man.

Meanwhile, Margo your review was spectacular-- far better than sitting through it I have no doubt!

And what is wrong with a good butt kissing? I could spend my life doing it.

re: Margo on The GREAT Mme. Suzanne Somers

It just amazes me how every Margo post turns into a butt-kissing festival.

Where is the butt kissing and what would it benefit anyone to kiss Margo's anonymous ass? It's not as if she really were Bette Davis.

Margo has established herself as one of the most intelligent and well-rounded posters ever to grace the boards here at BWW. Just because people respect her and look forward to her posts on various subjects doesn't mean we are kissing her ass.

Now all the RobbieJ and Marc Shaiman ass kissing may be getting out of control, and don't get me started on that freak Eddie Varley (Jeesh is he a sad hack or what?). But Margo deserves every bit of idolatry we can summon.

PEACE.

as far as butt-kissing goes, I have just one question to ask:

Which shade of lipstick would MargoChanning prefer?

What saddens me the most (since I can't summon the guts to see this debacle) is that they can't even give free tickets away. When your show is so bad that people won't see your show for free (present company included...)

Less than 4 hours till I see it -- FOR FREE!

The friend who offered me the free tickets couldn't find anyone else to take them. MY bf and I only took them because we're already going down to New Hope later this summer to see Joyce DeWitt in Gypsy, so it seemed like the "right thing to do."

Which will be worse? Suzanne Somers as herself? Or Joyce DeWitt as Madame Rose?

The mind boggles.

re: Margo on The GREAT Mme. Suzanne Somers

Yes. It was annoying me that everyone is referring to Margo as a woman.

You got to admit - everyone does indeed kiss Margo's butt - but that dosen't mean he dosen't deserve it sometimes. If we ever have a question or need info - Margo is always here to help us out.

Kiss Margo's butt?
I would kiss Margo's feet.
Margo's posts are a treat.
