Mariah! I'm so glad that someone is on my wavelength here - I was just thinking the other day, how amazing would it be if they cast Mandy Moore as Effie!
Who's with me?
[Hehe, I just accidentally posted a very similar comment on another thread by mistake.]

Mariah had the highest-selling album of 2005. She had the biggest song of her career with "We Belong Together". Have you been living under a rock? And even before The Emancipation Of Mimi came out, Mariah was still a big seller. It's just that, compared to the crazy mass amount of albums she sold in the mid-90's, going 'only' double platinum was looked at as a failure.
And while I agree Beyonce fashioned a lot of her look after Mariah... she's still notably darker. She CAN look very light, and Mariah can look darker than she does a lot of the time, but I don't think it's enough.

I've seen photos in Musician magazine of Mariah taken when she first burst on the scene and even though she had a complexion that is shades lighter than that of most African Americans, she still looked far more "black" back then, than she does now.
I don't say this as some kind of judgement, and I'm not implying that she was trying to make herself look less ethnic, but she obviously has had some work done. The nose is definitely NOT the same.
That said, we're talking about how she looks now. I agree with Margo. Having someone out front who looks caucasian makes the story of the mainstream crossover of "obviously black" artists, nonsensical.

"mariah and beyoncé are nowhere near the same complexion."
then YOU are the one who's blind. beyonce could pass for a white girl just as much as mariah.
#29re: Mariah as Deena?
Posted: 8/7/06 at 10:55amShe'd probably demand to sing "And I am telling you..." Like a diva of Mariah's stature is going to let a song like THAT go to another actress/singer. Right.

I must be blind as well because I'd never mistake Beyonce for a white girl.
Yes, Beyonce has light skin, for a BLACK woman. But there are many black women with two black parents who are even lighter than Beyonce. MUCH lighter.
I'd never see Bey walking down the street and mistake her for Paris Hilton.

I guess I'm ALSO blind? Beyoncé could not, by any stretch of the imagination, pass for a white girl. Mariah looks like a white girl.

No one in their right mind would mistake Mariah for Paris Hilton. Please stop the exaggeration.
And of course the Beyonce Brigade would say that Mariah's voice is too srong for Deena, as if Beyonce's isn't.
If Beyonce who has patterned herself stylistically like Mariah, can play Deena, then Mariah can play Deena.

Posted: 8/7/06 at 1:06pmI really don't think that Beyonce has patterned herself off of Mariah. If there is anyone out there who Beyonce has patterned herself off of, it's Tina Turner.

I'm missing the exaggeration. Mariah's as white as I am.

Mariah CAREY as Deena Jones?!?!
Preposterous.
And, regardless of her skin tone...
Mariah seems waaaaaaay too trashy to ever pull off a classy role like Deena. She always looks like she needs to take a shower.

Mariah's voice may not be as strong as it once was. But it is still a mighty fine instrument. Plus, it never stopped Madonna - who has a vocal range of about half an octave, the acting talent of a caterpillar and looks about as Argentinian as Mickey Mouse - from attempting Evita, and she won a Golden Globe for that performance. Yuck!
Anyway, I'd love to hear Mariah belt out any of the numbers from Greamgirls, whether in the film or not. I'd also love to hear her sing 'Defying Gravity'.

I will agree that Mariah is far too light-skinned for the role, however, I have to say that I disagree COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY with whoever implied that Beyoncé Knowles has an equally powerful voice.
Her voice is thin, nasal, COMPLETELY lacking in timbre, and she has no range. Michelle is the *real* voice of Destiny's Child...I have no idea why people seem to keep wanting to believe that Bouncy is some sort of big black vocal diva...Bwaysinger after a martini has a bigger, blacker voice than she will EVER have.
I would KILL to hear Mariah tackle some Dreamgirls stuff. (And "Bless The Lord" from the 2000 revival of Godspell, a la Shoshana, but a million times better, since it's beyond obvious who Shoshana is hearing in her head every time she opens her mouth...*quiver*)

Posted: 8/10/06 at 9:11amMariah Carey is one of the best singers out there today. Her voice is simply ASTONISHING. I would love to hear her sing anything on Broadway because she is the obvious influence in a lot of these young singers' voices today. (See post above this one)

"And why not sing every note? If I had her range I'd milk every song for all it was worth, too."
Oh, I totally disagree. She doesn't always sing so much as beat every song into submission.
I loved Vision of Love. Disliked everything else. I can't stand her.

I think Mariah is obviously gifted with talent and range. I just dislike the sound of her voice, and I hate how she chooses to USE her voice half the time. Plenty of people obviously love her, which is cool. I just, personally, can't stand her. I don't like her music or her style.
I think Beyonce has an impressive voice. I've never really been into her music, although I like a few songs. A friend of mine begged me to see Destiny's Child last year, so I went to the concert and I'll be damned if I didn't wind up having a fantastic time! They put on a great show. Plus, I met Jai Rodriguez (he was a sweetheart)!
