re: Marquee Value : A Chorus Line

Mary Poppins- Looks very classic & simplstic but elegant. I like it.

A Chorus Line- Very nice. Shows the class of a classic show.

Yes, their plain but plain is sometimes better than extravagance.

re: Marquee Value : A Chorus Line

I actually don't like the Mary Poppins one, only because there's no contrast between the sign and the theatre exterior. I think it gets washed out. Looking at the pics in the article, the first thing I noticed was Johnny Depp's in the background.

As for Chorus, I'm sure more will be added to the theatre when the show gets closer to box office opening up. But I like it simple; I only hope they add the light up letters on top soon. Another thing they might do is add the pics of the cast above the marquee, a la Taboo. They could add those silhouettes there.

re: Marquee Value : A Chorus Line

I don't remember how A Chorus Line's theatre is set up but perhaps, they'll do the line out front a la RENT?

Also...some may find these cheesy but I thought it would be "cute" to do something with the long "New Amsterdam" sign. Maybe turn it into a chimney on top? Like smoke coming out and a chimney broom. Or maybe a "figurine" of Mary flying up and down. It just seems a little...needing magic.

boxers7: You just hit the nail on it's head for me. I thuight the Marquee for MARY POPPINS was rather plain. It wasn't bad, it was just so... lame and ordinary. If they decorated the exterior of the theatre like you said (The chimney/chimney broom) I would love it.

God, I need to see this show again. I saw it in London with most of the original cast (Laura Michelle Kelly was out, but her understudy, Poppy Tierney was FANTASTIC!) and loved it a lot. I wish they just kept the original logo, though. I find the new one rather lame. The way they put it on the marquee is great, though.

If you think the marquee needs magic...wait until you see the show ! boring.

re: Marquee Value : A Chorus Line

You and me both, Piazzaslight- why did they have to go and change the logo? Were they afraid that people just wouldn't "get" the flower outline? People understood the African-styled lion's head logo of "The Lion King" without Disney having to "cute it up"...

I just think the Schoenfeld needs a face lift. It shouldn't be so boxy and boring.

Mary Poppins actual logo is quite boring and it really does fade into the background. I liked the flowery logo in London. I wonder why they changed it.

re: Marquee Value : A Chorus Line

I really prefered the original London logo and marquee.
re: Marquee Value : A Chorus Line

Unfortunately I think they changed it to the new look in London, too.

re: Marquee Value : A Chorus Line

The problem with the MARY POPPINS logo is that it's too colourless. The New Amsterdam's marquee is on 42nd Street which is FULL of neon signs etc. Unlike THE LION KING's yellow-and-black marquee, MARY POPPINS's marquee is very plain and has very little colour on it, it just doesn't stick out. Unless you know where to look and what to look for you just walk past it without even noticing it.

In London's West End they use the same logo now, but the theatre is located in the area (Soho) which is not that full of neon signs and such. And the theatre is the one of the biggest buildings on Old Compton Street, so you just can't miss it.

But anyway, I preferred the old MP logo, it was much more elegant and interesting.

Me: EXACTLY! I went down 42nd Street yesterday in the middle of a mad rush just to look at it, and I couldn't even see it till I was on top of it. It just looked like any other billboard. Seems to me the London royal blue design would be far more eye-popping on 42nd Street.

Me too. I wonder if they'll use that billboard for Mary Poppins at some point.

re: Marquee Value : A Chorus Line

I think the marquee is great. I'm just curious as to why it's no bigger...as in longer. LK's logo was three times as long when it was at the New Amsterdam.

I love the Poppins one, it has the name that everyone knows and it adds something new. Great job.

That billboard will likely be used, as it was for TLK. A Disney movie is being advertised on it now. Once September rolls along it should be up. They should make it more vibrant though.

Boxers- Love your idea! It reminds me of the purple, glittery can of hairspray outside the Neil Simon; just added a whole lot of character and visual excitement. I'd love to see them do something like you suggested with the tall New Amsterdam post rising from the marquee.

re: Marquee Value : A Chorus Line

I love the Mary Poppins marquee. It looks incredibly nice! A Chorus Line is a little to simplistic for me. But I can't wait to see the Mary marquee in person when I come down a week from Thursday!

re: Marquee Value : A Chorus Line

I LOVE THE WEST END MARQUEE. That's how a marquee should look. It's simple, yet elegant. They don't have those big steel boxes with the caps on the end like the Broadway ones. With the airconditioners being exposed. It's so hideous. Come on Broadway producers, fancy it up! Take some pride in it!

re: Marquee Value : A Chorus Line

I liked the old Mary Poppins logo better.

The flowers forming her silouette gives you the impression that there is something magical inside the theater.

The new one says nothing to me. It says that inside the theater is...product.

re: Marquee Value : A Chorus Line

Even though they changed it, they could have at least restrained themselves from using cartoonish letters.

re: Marquee Value : A Chorus Line

I'm really very curious as to why they changed this.
The biggest musicals were often recognizable even without a printed title. The Chorus Line 'line,' the 2 Cats eyes, the Phantom mask, the Saigon helicopter etc....
That original logo of Mary made out of flowers could have easily been the only thing on the Playbill cover and it would have been fabulous. There are several variations on this new design, which makes it hard to give it one, solid logo. This baffles me.
