Married Couple Mazzie & Danieley Take Over in NEXT TO NORMAL 7/19

I love Alice Ripley AND think she's crazy. Do I have a place at the table?

I think this is really exciting. I like Next to Normal and certainly love a chance to see Marin sing. And Jordan, this DOES explain why she was bubble lettering the Enron Playbills. Collectors item?

Marin has a kick-ass belt. She'll sing the score differently than Alice for sure, but I think he voice will adapt well to the music's vocal demands. I'm really looking forward to seeing what she does with the role.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Marin's belt, at times, actually reminds me of Jessica's sound. That was my first thought when I heard she was cast. Marin is a bit more elegant, but there are definite similarities.

This intelligent post from ATC perfectly describes my feelings on Mazzie's casting (though I disagree in that I've liked her work in several of the things I've seen her in.) It also raises a very valid point that has yet to be discussed here in terms of her performance style:

I really like Danieley and I think he may be wonderful in this.

I have not seen Mazzie in a performance I've liked. She's cold, her performances are calculated, and as Hepburn once said about Streep, "You can see the wheels turning" when she performs. She thinks about it too much.

Diana is about a woman who is not in control. If Mazzie is anything in performance, it's controlled...

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Mazzie is a wonderful actress, period. She is not cold and calculating. I saw her and Danieley in "110 in the Shade" in LA a few years ago and her first act curtain number, Old Maid, was overwhelmingly emotional and true. Have no fear for her abaility to dig deep in this part.
Faced with these Loreleis, what man can moralize!
