Old Man Barnes just keeps rollin' along. And we are the exact opposites on those three shows.
I disliked Poppins, but loved Grey Gardens and Drowsy.
And that's what makes this world go 'round.
(That... and the Kander & Ebb song.)
EDIT: PaintTheMusic---sounds like someone needs a good car cover for Christmas!

This isn't a review, but I think it's worth mentioning:
In Peter Filichia's column today, he breaks down Mary Poppins' chances at various Tony Awards.
Peter Filichia's Column
does anyone know which michael and jane performed last night?
I liked the show overall, but I don't disagree with most of the criticisms pointed out in the reviews -- particularly about the ominpresent smile. Sure, Brantley was a little harsh, but that's his prerogative.
did anyone read the review from the daily news this morning? it's fabulous
Isn't Clive Barnes like 80 years old?
There should be a "test" critics have to take after they pass a certain age...you know, like the one drivers take so their perception, judgment and reflexes can be assessed before they cause a nine-car pile-up and do serious damage to themseleves or others.
Mr. Barnes, get off the road!!! You're killin' me!!!
Doesn't bother me in the least that it got mixed reviews. Maybe it'll be easier to score decent seats in six months.
I haven't seen POPPINS yet (and quite honestly, I have no desire to) but if Clive Barnes loved it, that usually means that I will hate it.
I'm sorry, but I find Clive Barnes to be a horrible, horrible critic.
And that new Daily News guy needs to go. Kissell was much better.
Barnes was the only reviewer to rave CARRIE, and for that he will always be dear to my heart.
Anyone else a little disturbed by the number of Mary threads? You'd think BROOKLYN was being remounted.
Well, I wouldn't consider Brantley's review an outright pan. It's more negative than his reivew for the London production, but he pointed out that he liked the set, he seemed to enjoy the cast (He goes on a bit more about Gavin Lee in his London review). I don't really understand his problem with the book. I love the film, but the whole family psychological drama does work well in this. I wouldn't say that Linda Winer hated it either. She enjoyed the new songs (minus Anything Can Happen, which I think is more than servicable. It's a great song.) and raved about Lee. I'd consider the reivews mixed-to-negative.
Trust me, if they put that little thing Brantley said about the set, it'll run for years.

Judging from the photos, it seems that Katherin Doherty and Matthew Gumley were on last night.
To be honest, I'm not surprised about the mixed critical reception, which is what big shows almost always get anyway.
To each his own, though. I don't necessarily agree with the critics, but I don't let that bother me.
um...no...it was delaney moro and alexander scheitinger...
i am so confused...on the BWW pictures, they show delaney and alexander taking bows, but in these broadway.com pictures - http://www.broadway.com/Gen/Buzz_Photo_op.aspx?ci=540787 - it's katherine and matthew...
maybe they alternated the kids throughout the show?

Thanks for keeping this thread going, Margo! Unfortunately, due to rupturing several vertebrae, I am going to be stuck upstate in the frozen tundra for an indefinite length of time (although I did just get my "Spamalot" tour tickets- hell, I'll crawl if I have to!), but it is interesting to step back and view the contreverso over "Poppins". I still think that Laura Michelle Kelly got a really raw deal, and would much rather have seen-and heard- the marvelous Rebeccca Luker in the part of Mary- but, that having been said, I am all for anything that brings people into, or back to, LIVE theatre. Like it or not, Times Square had deteriorate to a swamp until the unholy duet of Eisner and Guliani stepped in and swept things up, and now we must pay the price that Disney has exacted for it's part in that operation. What I'd REALLY like to see is a return to sensible ticket prices (yes,I understand thea ratio of cost to inflation and all that), but it costs me a bit over $300 to take a family of 4 to see "Spam" on tour and that's just plain silly.I don't ever forsee prices dropping again, not after "The Producers" and "Wicked" pushed them over the $100 mark, but it would be great if Broadway theatre was finacially accessible to families with children- not just Rosie O'Donnell's brood or the inner city kids that they haul into the theatres once a year while the rest of us pay the full shot, or stay home ( and not even just "Kids Night on Broadway").
Thank you for pointing out the vast differences in the written text of the books-which I read as a child- and the movie and now the stage production, but people were bound to expect a mirror image of the movie and now they, and the critics, are left befuddled and confounded.
I miss the days when shows could open and close within days- BEFORE advance ticket sales-when a show would be on the road sometimes for months while they fine-tuned it for Broadway.... ahh, those really were the days.
"Thank God I'm Old"!
After reading all these mixed reviews, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who was disappointed in Ashley Brown's portrayal of Mary Poppins. As the reviews said, she was just robotic and lifeless, lacking in charm and personality. Sure, the girl can sing but that doesn't translate into acting.
>As for the Best Musical Tony Award, I *HIGHLY* doubt that with Grey Gardens, Curtains and Spring Awakening running it will hace a chance; as a matter of fact, if Legally Blonde is any good, Mary Poppins might not even be nominated.
Hmm I've seen all the shows mentioned above (minus Legally Blonde that hasn't started the SF run yet but I already have a tix for the show) but if MP doesn't get a best musical award nomination, I doubt Curtains gets neither .
My question is, will Gavin Lee be in the best leading actor category or best supporting actor? I thought he got a best supporting nomination for the Oliver Award.

I think Ill boycott the Tonys if Mary Poppins doesnt win atleast one of the design awards.
