The shows appeal to such different tastes, there is no clear way to say. Personally, I preferred Gentleman's Guide -- but it's not everyone's cup of tea. I LIKED Matilda, and there were moments that were spot on.

I see most shows multiple times. Saw GG last year, and have absolutely no desire to return.
Meanwhile, I've seen Matilda 19 times. So....

Matilda is a clever, daring spectacle and just happens to be my favorite musical ever. I vote Matilda, but it truly depends on what you are interested in!

The upside is you can't go wrong with either. I find GG more silly and farcical, whereas Matilda is more whimsical and joyful.
Right this second, if I were picking, I'd just want to hear and experience "When I Grow Up" in Matilda... but tomorrow, I could flip.

Posted: 1/22/15 at 9:30amDidn't like MATILDA at all, a very long evening of shrieking kids and over-the-top, unfunny adults (yes, I saw the original company here). GG is smart, funny, wonderfully Gilbert-and-Sullivanish, with great music and great style.

I haven't seen GG, but it looks really interesting and I've heard great things for people. It would be more of the adult oriented show.
I love Matilda! It is a wonderful show with a beautiful score. That being said. I did see it on Tuesday night, and I felt like it had aged a little. The pacing was weird, and I felt like the actors were making some weak choices. I think they need a visit from their director.
So for that reason I would go see GG since it's a newer show. Hopefully Matilda gets its mojo back.

I've seen GG twice - and Matilda more times than that. If you can swing both, go for both. Winning the Matilda lottery is pretty successful these days and if money is an issue, it's only $27 if you win.
Because of it's rotating cast, I think the quality of Matilda can vary a bit more than GG whose cast is more secure. One of the two GG leads has just left but I hear the understudy that took over is excellent as well. But I think I have enjoyed some of the later Matilda cast members more than some of the originals. I am a huge fan of Alison Luff among others..and two of the 4 newest Matilda's are among my favs (and that is not to knock anyone else..you have to be pretty amazing to do this show well).
That said, if you feel like seeing a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta type show, GG should be your pick. If you are looking for something a little more different, Matilda would be the way to go.

Both are wonderfully entertaining in different ways so it depends on your taste in musicals?
I say go with Matilda.
