Maybe they can finally get someone decent to play Tony now?
I wonder if this is his own decision or it was decided his contract wouldn't be renewed. I wish him luck though!
Hence, I will be seeing West Side Story on Tuesday December 15th.
Has there been any word on who is taking over the role?
I guess if there was, it would have been put in the press release as well. Now I might actually get excited over seeing this again, as terrible as that sounds.
Playbill.com says no replacement announced.
Does this mean Olivo and Scaglione renewed?

My initial reaction was, did he jump or was he pushed? lol

12 months too late....
Max VonEssen would be a great Tony. I saw him do it last year at Pittsburgh CLO.
Do you think they'll find this an opportunity to bring in a big name? How have tickets sales been?
There's not enough time to do a reality TV show to 'find the new star'...
*snark*
Josh Young, perhaps?

This is a tough role for a "name" though. He does involve some vocal chops, granted Cavenaugh pretty much disproved that. I just thought he was all wrong for the part. He seemed like everyone's perfect older brother up there instead of a gang member.
As much I as I LOVE Karen in this role and in any role I want her to be in a new show.
I wouldn't mind them letting Matt Hydzik step into the role full time. I saw both Hydzik and Cavenaugh as Tony and I much preferred Hydzik. He knows the role so you wouldn't have to pay for put ins and such.
I think the producers decided not to renew his contract...his statement seemed forced.

If you continue to read the Playbill article (at least), it states he has a couple of projects ahead: a tv pilot and a series of concerts with his wife. Sounds like he just decided it was time to pursue other projects.
It says that he has a pilot in development and a concert series planned...my guess is that it was his choice to leave. From what I read Arthur Laurents is practically in love with him too. He had probably just had enough, and knows he has other stuff to pursue out there.
And you think that Arthur is actually going to try to cast someone better than Matt? Think again. By doing so, he'd be proving the naysayers right.
My personal preference would be either Max von Essen or Josh Young.
neal i totally agree!
Max needs to come to just any show!
the man is absolutly great!
Can't say I'm overly sad to see him leave. He was not anything special. I definitely want to see it again once he leaves.
LJay, I also hope that Karen and Josefina renewed.
This was Matt's decision.
