Maureen Moore in Grey Gardens TONIGHT (7/10), anyone going?

Posted: 7/10/07 at 11:07pmI saw her tonight! She was amazing! After seeing Christine, I didn't really know what to expect, but I was very impressed. I liked some of her acting choices better than Christine's.

I just got back...
Well, Maureen sure is different from Christine... Christine, even while portraying the 'crazy' aspects of her characters, remains very regal. Moore, well, she was all over the place. She is talented, no doubt, but so wrong for the Edies. She seems better suited to a musical comedy rather than a show like this. Was thrown for a loop by her, she was funny, but I don't know if I was laughing at her Edies, or her herself. I think the latter, sadly.
She was all over the place. And I mean that literally. I don't think she stood still for a second. She rushed her lines and stumbled through the ones she didn't rush.

I dropped by and saw Maureen after I saw GYPSY tonight. She's so incredibly sweet I can't get over it.
She had my friend, my father and I meet her backstage which was a thrill. We chatted for a while and she and my father talked a bit about things they hold in common.
She actually told us she was considered for the part of the Chaperone previous to Beth Leavel which would have been amazing, I think. After GG closes shes going out to spend some time in Utah bringing along her (widower as of May 20th) father to live with her brother and nephews. She said she does have projects lined up in NY that she'll have to return for which I'm excited about.
When we spoke recently she said that the performance I saw her in (6/9) was the first since her mother had passed. She couldn't get through "Another Winter" in her voice lesson that week and said that that emotion poured out while she was on stage and that it was a tribute to her. She truly is an amazing individual.
I was sad to hear very few people stuck around to see her at the stagedoor after the show. I actually made a scene on my way up to GYPSY before the show started.
I stopped by to drop her a "good luck" note and there was a line of people contemplating returning their tickets while reading the sandwich board with an article from Time Out New York about her. I stopped and yelled at them, "Yea, I know, she's not Christine. She was understudy for Bernadette Peters in GYPSY and shes amazing, if you throw away your tickets you're missing out on a fabulous show and performer!"

Posted: 7/11/07 at 12:26amI'm sure that the lack of people at the door for signitures had something to do with the fact that many people didn't even stay and returned their tickets. That line was very large and the house looked rather small. Also, because this wasn't a planned performance for Maureen, I'm sure many of her "fans", like yourself, couldn't make it.

Maureen also looked like she had some issues. She was sweating like mad and during the first act wore her robe off the shoulders and wiped her face and chest with a tissue throughout. At one point she actually took something, using the drink she had, placing something in her mouth and doing the classic head throw back that people do when they take pills. It almost looked like she was haivng hot flashes... In the second act she kept pulling up her sleeves and wiping herself down again.
For sure she is talented, this just didn't suit her.

Little ETie. But the diva keeps phoning it in. Ouch.

I laughed... way too hard at that, Jerby.
Anyway, awesome reviews! Wish I was in the area so I could have jumped on the chance to go.

That made me laugh way too hard.
I'm leaving a little early so I can run by the box office.

Saw her last night. Passing by the theater I saw that she was on and ran in and got a ticket. She was terrific. Different than Ebersole but equally wonderful. If you get the chance, don't miss her in the role.
Just my opinion, I may be wrong.

Posted: 7/11/07 at 10:12amI agree - I wasn't there last night, but I saw her a few months ago and thought she was spectacular.

You're not
This woman couldn't phone in a performance if she tried. There is so much raw emotion in her performace you forget about if the vocals are spectacular (which they are).
Her timing is spot-on. If I hear anything about her going on I'll post. They should give Christine off so she has a solid 3 days of (much needed/earned) rest.

bwaygal- That is really really really stupid of you.
Tap-thanks-you really don't know me and you're calling me stupid. I am entitled to do (or not do) as I please. I've seen Moore in other stuff and am not wild about her. That said, I will give her yet another chance to try to blow me away tonight should Ebersole not be there.
(She's failed two times prior in other work. Maybe third time's a charm.)
