I just bought tickets to see American Idiot in a couple of weeks and have time for just one more show while I am in NYC.
Should I see Memphis, Sondheim On Sondheim or Promises, Promises?
MEMPHIS
memphis
Another one for MEMPHIS.
I would also exchange AMERICAN IDIOT for SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM tickets.
I would say Sondheim on Sondheim. Memphis will soon be a community theatre favorite and Promises is done all the time. Sondheim on Sondheim is a unique exploration into the work and life of one of the most important artists Broadway has ever seen, and while it will be able to be licensed I doubt it will be done often, and when it is it will not be done with as much passion as this show has.

It explains why better than I could.
Sondheim on Sondheim. As I've said before, it's unlike anything else and if you are a fan of Sondheim's work, it should not be missed. The performances are splendid (including Cook's Tony-nominated return to the stage) and the segments with Stephen Sondheim talking are worth the price of admission alone.
I'd definitely go with Sondheim on Sondheim. That was the one show I was genuinely excited to see all season and I feel privileged to have seen it, even if it's not a perfect show (what show was this season?). It is, however, a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Sondheim on Sondheim
If you miss Sondheim on Sondheim, you will hate yourself someday.
Wow! At the start of this thread I thought everyone was going to say Memphis but it now looks like the majority suggests Sondheim On Sondheim. Thanks for your responses. Any more thoughts?
If you are a Sondheim fan, I have no idea why you'd want to miss it...especially with those other choices.

Skip them all.
MEMPHIS is a tired batch of cliches, SONDHEIM can be re-created at home by putting your ipod on shuffle and reading a good Sondheim biography, and PROMISES is a bore.
See the brilliant revival of OUR TOWN at the Barrow Street Theater. A magnificent revival of the greatest play of the 20th Century trumps pretty much everything else.
