Posted: 2/12/08 at 6:20pmI think the whole argument about "retarded" or "slow developped" is out of topic and stupid. Yeah, I say STUPID. Should I use some word else?

"Should I use some word else?"
I'm sorry, but are you retarded, or just slow developped?

Sanda ~ if your translation service gave you "slow developped", you need a new translation service. I said developmentally delayed. (I assume since you said earlier your English isn't good you may be using a translation service. If you're not...well...I kind of apologize I suppose. Please don't change words in that case.)

See that's the kind of usage of retarded that bugs me. Theaterdiva, you are clearly trying to insult sanda by suggesting she is retarded because of her syntax problems.
When people use the word retarded as an insult like you just did, then when I refer to my cousin as retarded, I gotta hear a whole bunch of nonsense because now everybody gets confused.
Don't use retarded as an insult. : ) Even when youre mad. : )

Asking a stranger on a message board if they are retarded is one way you can use the word as an insult.
Using the medical term retard when talking about my cousin who has been diagnosed by doctors as retarded is not the same thing.
Am I not making this clear or something? Let me try it one more time.
Retarded is a medical term. It CAN be offensive if used purposely as an insult like theaterdiva just did to sanda.
But, when used for its intended medical purpose, its not an insult.
I really hope this finally makes it crystal clear. If it doesn't......I don't know how else I can explain it!

Yeah I understand: The word retarded can sometimes be offensive. Of course. However, it is by no means right up there with the racial and homophobic slurs that theaterdiva compared it to, and by no means should we banish retarded from our vocabulary.

Posted: 2/12/08 at 7:01pmas they would say in Family Guy "I work with the retardeds, and I am proud of it." There is clearly a difference between using it as an insult, and using it when referring to someone's diagnoses.

exactly. If someone here said, "Sanda, your English sucks!" should I take that as insult? of course not. Why I should take a fact as insult?
However, If someone said, "sanda, you are retarded.". I would take that as insult cause that's not true.
I wonder how theatrediva cannot differetiate these two...

I'm a guy, but yes, that was the point.
That made me laugh, though.

Posted: 2/12/08 at 7:31pmThere is also a difference between saying someone is mentally retarded and just flat out calling them a retard. "Retard" is generally NOT accepted (at least in my experiences).

I personally don't agree with the use of the expression, period, but I will agree that there is a difference. (Like jordan, I have found that people are horrified by it, and tend to say "developmentally delayed," or something of the sort.)
That probably didn't make much sense, but I know what I meant.

Can we just stop using that word?
It's awful.
And no matter what anyone says, it's not right.
