Hey missyrose, welcome to BWW where people who don't agree with you are idiots!
Seriously, can we somehow get these people banned who insist on the name-calling when we're trying to have a discussion?

Seriously, you're the first one I'd ask to be banned.

I am once again left amazed by the ignorance...

"On a related note-I had a man in my theater one time who was emitting a strong odor. The man was old and shabby, perhaps not homeless, but a sad sight just the same. Some women who were sitting next to him complained about the odor and were demanding that the man either be asked to leave or move away from them.
"This man can NOT be asked to leave or move. He has every right to the seat he paid for. The women, on the other hand, could be moved as there were plenty of vacant seats. They made the entire thing a difficult ordeal including yelling. They wanted to stay in their seats. In order to quiet the women, they were eventually offered tickets to another performance."
You are confusing public relations and the law, which never go hand-in-hand. In the above situation you described, you had every right to remove the offending patron from the premises. He has absolutely no protected right to emitt a strong odor. The women who were offended had every right to ask that you re-locate him. Most business require a certain decorum for their customers...theme parks, including Disney, don't allow shirts with vulgarities on them; restaurants require diners to have shirts, shoes and pants (some restaurants require jackets for men). So if a theatre kicks out a smelly old man, then they are completely in the right. The fact that you accomadated the women wasn't nice...it was required. They weren't the ones in the wrong, even when they made a scene because you were wrong (at least legally speaking).
As for the disabled person, businesses are only required to make REASONABLE accomodations. It is true that they cannot refuse to sell tickets to or admit persons of handicap into the theatre. However, once it becomes clear that the person cannot remain reasonably quiet, and that it affects other patrons no matter where you put him in the house, then you have every legal right to remove him. The ADA is not absolute...everything must be within reason. Attempts at accomodation are all that's required.

I wasn't confusing anything, since, when confronted with the problem, I checked with my superiors (theater owners) before acting upon it, and I followed their instructions.
thanks for the info, though.

I have no hatred towards you, nor anyone else. Please furnish evidence where I've shown hatred towards you.
I would ask to have you banned (from this thread, at least) because I think some of your opinions can be dangerous to some posters who may be too naive to form their own. Especially since you claim to be a teacher.

Posted: 2/12/08 at 2:58pmBTW George-how is it that you're posting on a message board during school hours? shouldn't you be in the classroom or doing some preparation? just curious. It isn't something I saw going on during my 25 years of teaching.

Posted: 2/12/08 at 4:14pmall I asked was that we ban these people who insist on calling people names (i.e. idiot) when they dont' agree with someone. So then jane said I should be the first one banned, because my opinions are dangerous? I think there's nothing more dangerous than people who threatedn our civilized conversation with name-calling.

remember, theaterdiva didnt read the rest of that thread where we discussed how the word "retarded" is a medical term and there is nothing wrong with it when its used IN CONTEXT and in particular situations. I never said I walked around spouting off the word retarded all the time.
That discussion went on forever and ever and I thought we were done with it, and I'm not going to start another is-retarded-an-acceptable-word debate .
