Meryl Streep at Boeing Boeing but not Liaisons...

Perhaps she supported her daughter by seeing her in previews? Opening night is for press, so if she wanted to accomplish what you just stated, then what's the problem?
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

well, I don't know... I would want my mother at my broadway debut even if she did see the show in previews... it's a pretty momentous occasion in a young actor's life..
that's a really big mic...

Jamie Deroy was not a BOEING BOEING. Was she visiting a sick friend in the hospital, per chance?

Mamie Gumer has done professional theatre and film before. It's just another opening. Mamie's a big girl. Perhaps Meryl joined her at the after-party? Who cares?

Perhaps you might feel differently if your mom was Meryl Streep.
That's entirely a personal decision between Mamie and her mom. It's really none of our business.

I don't think there's anything wrong in mentioning that there are photos of Meryl at Boeing but not at her daughter's opening. I was thinking the same thing myself especially after seeing pictures of Mr. Gummer at the Liasons opening. I just figured that Meryl saw the show in previews but stayed away opening night so Mamie could stand on her own which she does beautifully. No big deal. There are also pics of David Rabe at Lily's opening night in Crimes of the Heart but no Jill Clayburgh. Sounds like an unselfish gesture from a mother to a daughter.

I remember reading that someone saw Meryl at one of the previews.

She's been at her other shows...I distinctly remember photo "coverage" of Water's Edge and Marmelade.

I admire the decisions of both ladies- nothing to do with us -OK- leave it!
A pointless post.
A pointless post.
A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!''
Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'

Does Meryl like baseball?
Ben Affleck missed the opening of Cyrano to catch a Red Sox game, if I recall correctly. Yeah, it was, like, the World Series or something, but still!

Meryl simply did a Judy Garland and didn't attend her daughter's Opening Night in order to not take attention away from her daughter. Meryl has seen the show and most likely attended the after-party, but didn't want to ruin that performance by being in the audience.
Judy Garland NEVER attended any of Liza Minnelli's Opening Nights -- she was absent at the openings of BEST FOOT FORWARD and FLORA, THE RED MENACE for this exact reason.
I'm sure this is the same reason Ben Affleck avoided the Opening Night of CYRANO.

I hope, when Brooke Hogan makes her Broadway debut as a Roxie replacement, the Hulkster shows the same level of consideration.

What a bitch. Can you imagine hating your own daughter like that?

Borstal, three words...
Mommie
Dearest
II
OK, so the last one was more roman numeral than word, but still.

Seriously, I'm sure Meryl didn't want to steal the spotlight from her. Two of her daughters went to my school, and I remember when the older one, who was a year below me, did a production there, which Meryl actually helped direct. Meryl never made an appearance out in the lobby, but instead snuck out the back so her daughter could enjoy getting compliments from the audience without the distraction of her famous mother.

Brodyfosse--I am a huge Garland fan (and not so much a Liza fan), but wonder whether Judy not attending Liza's opening was Judy's decision or if the intentions were the same as what we are discussing. I read that she loved to take the spotlight away from Liza at all of Liza's appearances (and everytime Judy showed up at one of Liza's shows, Liza would be close to having a panic attack). Read the candid memoir of Kander and Ebb-Colored Lights-- and they talk about it quite at length.
I don't think the reasoning was the same as Meryl and Mamie

You said it, Calvin.
"Mom! It's vanilla or chocolate...just make a choice, already!"
**SLAP!**
"Don't you DARE force me to make ANY kind of choice, do you hear me young lady? DO YOU?!"

Nope. The only Opening Night Judy DID attend was the opening of THE ACT. She was absent at the opening of THE RINK.
She DID attend Liza's first performance in CHICAGO and VICTOR/VICTORIA as Liza was simply replacing someone and there would never be an 'opening night' performance.
Hope this helped clear-up some confusion.
