So they'll need to have a replacement ASAP. What about the current understudies...will one of them take over?
Having Carol back would be excellent seeing has she would fit perfectly as mother to Carey's Sophie.
A Sophie and a Donna who can sing and act is what Broadway's Mamma Mia! needs.
I adore Michele, she will always be a "Naughty Baby" to me.
Interesting, how I heard the same thing happened to Dee Hoty when she was in Mamma Mia. What is it about the role of Donna that seems to destroy the voices of certain actress's who sing it? I never thought the range was that high to begin with.

I have to say that I'm not surprised with this news. I only saw Michele once, but left the show saying "she'll never be able to do this for an entire year". Donna requires a belter and I just don't think she was capable of it. Yes, many Donna's have had voice problems due to the strain of the part....but none of them ended up leaving mid way thru their run. The poor woman was straining to give anything at the end of Winner Takes It All. I wish Michele well and hope next time she'll be cast in a more suitable role.
Her understudy Corinne, who is filling in for the time being, is wonderful. Go see her!
As for Carol Linnea Johnson...she is very happy performing as Donna in Vegas and I doubt she would go back to Broadway right now. Especially since her husband was just cast as a member of the Vegas ensemble.
But this is Mamma Mia...anything is possible!
PitPro2004: It's not a particularly high role, but pretty much every other song is Donna's, and it's very belty. It can be hell on the vocal cords of someone who doesn't take care of their voice or sing it properly.
Well it's been officially announced now that she has gone and her understudy is playing the role. I wonder if they'll replace Pawk as there is 8 months left until her contract end date or just let the understudy play it.
Her training probably isn't anything good.
I honestly don't think it's the training...It's more a matter of she's more an actress who sings than a singer. And this part calls for a singer.
Michelle is a graduate of CCM, so I'm sure her training is fine. I saw her cabaret act during her run in "Crazy for You" and she was wonderful.
