But I guess the super-serious response is that they are well known for spending way more on shows with limited runs (I mean from insane custom shoe costs to very lush sets) than they can possibly recoup in ticket sales. This places a huge burden on their fundraising department since they are never in the black. Their productions always look top-notch, but it is a difficult business model to sustain. Hence, the continuing debt problem.
If the audience could do better, they'd be up here on stage and I'd be out there watching them. - Ethel Merman
