"Canadian" Tour? Check your facts, Richard.

This season looks like a Dud.

Mirvish 2011 / 2012

tourboi, I imagine he thinks that having four or five Canadians in the cast qualifies as a "heavily Canadian tour".

I had to chuckle at the first paragraph of the column. Richard is nothing if not pompous and self-promoting.

Mirvish 2011 / 2012

Richard is a dream compared to Chicago's Chris Jones. Want to talk about pompous and self promoting/self serving?

I received a confirmation e-mail from Mirvish for tomorrows announcement which said something about '42 surprises'. What might that mean? Guess we'll find out tomorrow!

Sound`s like a decent Season, after Billy Elliot ends its run at the Cannon, what is going in its place?

Mirvish 2011 / 2012

I attended this morning - they put on a really good show! Songs from Mary Poppins and Hair were performed, and the "Horse" from War Horse made an appearance. If I had not seen the clip about War Horse I never would have been interested, but I am looking forward to it!

I will not be renewing my subscription this year, but I plan to see War Horse and Railway Children... possibly Hair if there is a good deal.

Mirvish 2011 / 2012

Out of the whole season, GHOST STORIES, PRIVATE LIVES, and CHESS interest me.

Saw the HAIR revival in the park, and the CanStage version a few years ago... just don't get the love for the show. Like a few of the songs, though.

POPPINS will do well while it's in TO.

Mirvish 2011 / 2012

Good press conference, and the talk of WAR HORSE made it sound interesting enoughI may go see it in New York in advance.

Agree POPPINS will be the holiday audience show this year, CHESS will play to it (large) cult following.

But... did anyone notice how British the seaon is? Everything except THE BLUE DRAGON and HAIR seems to come from England. Not that it is necesarily a bad thing but just curious. Dancap has claimed most of teh major musicals that are on the road now (NEXT TO MORMAL, COME FLY AWAY, ADDAMS FAMILY, MEMPHIS, NINE TO FIVE) which didn't leave a lot for Mirvish.

Now it is all down to who spends more on advertising.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

No cancellation`s this year. All shows are a go.

Was looking at the website and video for Chess. Hmm. Not sure about that. The production seems a bit camp, a bit '80's. But maybe there's no straight forward way of doing that show. I've read that many directors have been foiled Chess.

Although I have the original concept album and Broadway cast, I've only seen concert versions of Chess: the benefit concert at the Royal Alex in '92 and the recent televised concert version with Idina Menzel and Josh Groban.

I do like the music from the show (will this version have "Murano?" I'm one of the few that actually likes that song.) and will definitely go. Not getting a subscription, however.

Mirvish is bringing Fela! in at the end of this year (on tour). Obviously not on subscription.

Mirvish 2011 / 2012

I saw the Railway Children last weekend - it was cute and I enjoyed the play... (I was pleased with my $25 investment in it). However, that tent is crap-tastic! Slightly upgraded port-o-poties and reaaalllly uncomfortable seating. I would have been angry if I'd paid $100.

Mirvish 2011 / 2012

Egad, video of the upcoming Chess is making me want to see the show... less. Garishly Euro, it looks like We Will Rock You meets John Doyle. As they say in Chicago, whatever happened to class?

Where I was once anxious to go, now I'm trepidatious.

I saw Fela on Broadway. Interesting show and worth checking out but I would have rather seen it go into the Panasonic for a long(er) run with all the environmental treatment done for Broadway. It really helped to set the scene and atmosphere of the club. Much more immediate in the smaller space too. I fear it will be a bit lost at the Canon. Always glad to see new shows coming to Toronto tough.

Mirvish 2011 / 2012

Dear Subscribers,
I hope you enjoyed the first show in the 2011-12 subscription season, THE RAILWAY CHILDREN. In September and October, you will see the second and third shows of the season - PRIVATE LIVES, starring Kim Cattrall and Paul Gross, and CHESS THE MUSICAL. In the coming months, you will see the fourth, fifth and sixth shows of the season - MARY POPPINS, BLUE DRAGON and WAR HORSE.

Im writing to you with news about the final and seventh show of the season. When we originally announced the season, that show was to be HAIR, the landmark musical in a Tony Award-winning revival direct from Broadway.

Due to scheduling conflicts, HAIR can no longer meet its date obligations to us and we have decided to replace it with a new musical, one that I caught in an early production at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta and absolutely adored.

The new show is called BRING IT ON: THE MUSICAL and it will play from May 2 to June 3, 2012 at the Canon Theatre.

I will tell you more about BRING IT ON below, but first Id like to share some other news about this change. For those who had their hearts set on seeing HAIR, you will be happy to learn it will play December 13 to 31 at the Royal Alexandra Theatre.

If you would like your subscription package to include HAIR instead of BRING IT ON we will be happy to honour your ticket. You will just need to inform the subscription office by calling 416-593-4225 or 1-800-771-3933 by November 1, 2011.

If we do not hear from you by November 1, we will assume that you will be coming to see BRING IT ON. And here is more information about this new musical.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution called BRING IT ON "one high-energy drink with fiercely funny writing, catchy tunes and an explosively original mix of singing, acting, dancing and cheer." AOL.com raved that BRING IT ON "is guaranteed to be everything you wished for, nothing like you expected, but exactly what you will love!"

Set against the world of competitive cheerleading, BRING IT ON raises the stakes on over-the-top high school rivalries. This powerhouse new show hilariously proves that winning isnt everything when it means losing something - or someone - you really care about. BRING IT ON combines an exciting fresh sound, gravity-defying choreography, and a thrilling story to create a complete theatrical event worth cheering for.

BRING IT ON unites some of the freshest and funniest creative minds on Broadway. The team behind this new musical has also created such Broadway hits as Avenue Q, In the Heights, Next to Normal and Wicked.

I cant tell you how excited I am to have the opportunity to bring BRING IT ON to Toronto and to this years subscription.

Thank you for being a subscriber and making it possible for us to bring you a varied and eclectic season of the best shows from home, Broadway and Londons West End.

Sincerely,

David Mirvish

Interesting... I had no idea there was a Bring It On musical in the works, although I don't follow the news too closely. I'll have to learn more about it, see what it looks like but I think maybe there will actually be a second show this season, aside from War Horse, that I actually want to see from Mirvish. I was kind of on the fence about Hair and will have to ponder it a little more closely now that it's moving up to December.

"Scheduling conflicts" meaning "we want to put something into the Royal Alex in the Spring so we have to get Hair out of there".
