Mirvish 2011 / 2012

I agree Mirvish needs something for 2012 other than what is already scheduled. Lets be honest, Mary Poppins and 2P4H close by Jan 8th. The Blue Dragon 1/10 to 2/19, Bring it On May 2 to June 3 and of course the centre piece War Horse opening 2/10. Besides War Horse nothing to get the juices really flowing. Then there is Les Miz, is it coming or not? Their site doesn't show it scheduled for 2012 and latest rumours abound about it being delayed. The more I think about it The Wizard of Oz for the Christmas run of 2012 makes sense running into 2013. Or are they going to buy one of the Theatres the city wants to dump? Buy the Sony perhaps? Or rename Canon to Ed Mirvish Theatre? My $ is still on renaming the theatre. Why? They are bringing in lots of well stars from the TO stage, I believe from shows that will honour Ed Mirvish...

If they bought the Sony I think Aubrey Dan would pop a vessel since he has at least one show (A CHRISTMAS STORY) booked there in 2012.

I totally agree. Would be reminiscent of the last underhand move by them a few years back. Would NOT be good for Toronto Theatre if Mirvish bought the Sony.

Maybe it's something about SISTER ACT at the Canon? It was originally announced for fall 2012 - maybe it's been bumped up...

On the mirvish facebook page someone asked if they could bring there children to the event, and Mirvish said its not realy fun event for children. So Maybe they bought a few more Theatres, Some kind of music is included and distinguiished guests. maybe the Mayor Politicians Theatre People ect. They might have bought the Sony Centre, is Dec 6 an aniversary of some sort for something?

Robbie, Backbeat will probably be at the Royal Alex next summer. And TorontoScene the Les Mis train has sailed. It's not happening.

Mirvish 2011 / 2012

I would be surprised if that was the case. I saw Rain last Sunday, which was excellent. Have Mirvish announced that Les Mis is not coming?
#83

Mirvish 2011 / 2012

Not sure. I am taking what they said in October with a pinch of salt. Remember on 10/11 it was said that Les Mis was coming to Toronto July 12th, then it was delayed now nothing.

A Christmas Story opens December 18th at the Sony.

I have also heard that they are renaming the Canon.

I think Aubrey has been pretty open that he has his eye on the St Lawerence if the theatres go up for sale. It would need some massive modifications for it to be suitable for Dancap, though, and what would happen to CanStage? The Sony Centre is too large for traditional musicals and I don't think it would be profitable for either company. No decisions on whether or not the theatres will be put up for sale will be made until next year, I think, so I doubt the announcement would be that the Mirv bought the Sony Centre. But then again, no one expected them to buy the Canon after giving it up like they did either.

If Les Mis happens, it won't be until 2013. It's not completely dead yet, but my personal opinion is that it probably won't happen. The entire situation has been strange right from the announcement. Mirvish has never said a word about it, Cameron has always beaten them to the punch with the media. I think that's a first for Mirvish. I guess we'll wait and see.

Any casting news on Prince of Broadway yet?

I maintain that the TO landscape of commercial theatre would be very different now if Dancap had succeeded in obtaining the Canon.

I think it'd be a win win if they were able to get a firm hold on a downtown venue. Their shows at the Four Seasons (although I'm not sure how Next to Normal sold) have mostly been big successes for them.

Mirvish 2011 / 2012

I completely agree with you, tourboi. TO commercial theatre would be far better today had Mirvish not pulled the old bait-n-switch and screwed over Dancap. It's too bad Dancap can't use the Four Seasons a few more months a year. They definitely need a permanent venue in the core.

Mirvish 2011 / 2012

I totally agree with the last 2 comments that TO theatre would be better off today had Mirvish not as you say Leonardo2 pulled the old bait-n-switch.

Sorry, but I don't understand the references to a "bait and switch". I remember a court case over the Canon sale that Dancap lost (right?), but not the details. Are your comments referring to that?

You know youre a theatre geek when....

Im in the hospital having surgery tommorow, and I keep thinking "Awwww, I wont be near a computer when the announcement is made"

Hope its a great surprise!

I'll put money on the renaming of the theatre....

Because I just walked by and the word "Canon" is NO WHERE to be seen. All the signs are covered as if the building had no name.
#93

Mirvish 2011 / 2012

Not only that, but all of the window signage has been changed to various pictures of Ed.

Robbie3 - 'bait n switch' refers to the fact that Mirvish had a lease on the Canon and Panasonic for years, and then let that lease expire. Dancap moved in and signed a new lease for the theatres, taking over control and giving up the Elgin. Mirvish then stuck a deal to buy the Canon and Panasonic, leaving Dancap with no downtown venues.

Mirvish 2011 / 2012

Thanks for the response, Leonardo, but I did some googling on the 2008 Dancap lawsuit against Mirvish and Key Brand late last night (though I wasn't up as late as you!) and get a different story.

The judge in the case ruled that Aubrey Dan had entered into his dealings with Key Brand (owner of the Canon) knowing that Mirvish had a lease that ran through 2016. So there was no lapse and no bait-n-switch.

The judge also found that Dan knew in advance that Key Brand was required by contract to sell the theatre, and that Mirvish "had a preexisting right of first negotiation on the Canon Theatre that would be triggered on a sale."

What I'm left wondering is, if Dan wanted the Canon, why didn't he offer to buy it himself? He knew in advance that it was going up for sale; he knew that Mirvish would be bidding on it; given that he was a member of the Key Brand board that had to approve any sale, he probably even knew exactly what Mirvish's bid was. Why didn't he just outbid them?

Whatever, you can read the Star's report on this matter at http://www.thestar.com/article/481878, or Playbill's at http://www.playbill.com/news/article/120598 and draw your own conclusions.

You beat me by a couple of minutes! I came here to post the same thing. I was watching Breakfast Television this morning and they mentioned it on there. They didn't give away the name but said it was "very appropriate" so I'm guessing something like "Ed Mirvish Theatre" or something of the like. The name on the marquee outside the theatre is covered up right now for the big reveal.

Thanks to the subway going on hold at Dundas, I walked by the theatre this morning. The Canon sign has been removed from the Yonge St. marquee and a new sign is partially hidden (with an "H" revealed. It said:

_______H THEATRE

So, it would seem likely that it is either the "Mirvish" or "Ed Mirvish" Theatre.

http://www.toronto.com/article/706333--canon-theatre-renamed-in-honour-of-ed-mirvish

"Ed Mirvish Theatre" it is. Although, I will still probably end up calling it the Canon Theatre or at most Mirvish Theatre. It seems silly to call it by its full name. I know people who still have trouble remembering to call it the Canon and not Pantages or remembering which one is the Canon, so this should be interesting to get people to change their habits.

I agree with Melissa. They just renamed the theatre to honor Ed Mirvish, but it's just going to sit vacant for six months until Bring It On stops by (for a month....). Doesn't seem like a great use of such a special venue
