For a while now I've been searching for the demo recording of "Misery: The Musical" (a musical by Jeff Hockhauser and Bob Johnson based on Stephen King's novel "Misery")but I have not been able to find it. It's one of my favorite books and I'm really curious how the musical version of it works, so if anyone out there has the recording and sends it to me or a link to download it you will automatically become my favorite person in the world.

Wow I've never heard anything of a Misery musical. I wonder if it's basically a two person musical?

A lot of Stephen King's books would be great musicals or operas. Carrie could work if approached right. I think The Shining would be an awesome opera

I have the demo. I didn't like it at first but it really grew on me. The way that the Demo has been setup though is that it's Annie, Paul and an ensemble. I really enjoy some of the songs but don't know if it would work in practice. However we'll never really know because when the MCC wanted to produce the material back in the early 2000's the Stephen King estate put their foot down, and with the non-musical William Goldman version out I'm guessing he owns the stage rights and probably doesn't want to give them up.

William Goldman's non-musical play version that ran at the Bucks County Playhouse last year was really wonderful. It's been a long time since I've seen the movie, but the stage production was terrifying. I didn't sleep the night I saw the show. Johanna Day was amazing as Annie.

Interesting that Stephen King's work is getting renewed interest in musical form, just around the time he was working on his own "Ghost Brother's of Darkland County" with John Mellencamp which is now on national tour.

I hope Annie Wilkes does a big soft shoe with a sledgehammer and top hat!

All jokes about "musical theatre is campy and Stephen King musical theatre is doubly campy" aside, I've been hoping for years that someone like Jason Robert Brown would write a musical of "The Green Mile." It's an enormously powerful story, has some fantastic opportunities for musicalization, and would be maybe the most intense, visceral "men's chorus" show since Les Miserables.

However, I can't help but remember a British show called Fields of Ambrosia, which is essentially a high-camp fusion of The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption and The Music Man.

A song about Annie Wilkes and her sledgehammer would be delightful. If they get the right lyricist of course.

A weird idea would be a song Annie sings about her love for Misery and her see the title character doing a ballet with the two lovers. Uh Oh... What have I done?
