The new staging was designed to be able to tour better. Not many houses can fit the original sets.
Just wondering Dave19, have you actually seen this production in person or are you basing your opinions on online images and video clips?
I am a big fan of the original staging. However, having seen this version of the show, I found it to be more emotional and cinematic. Sure, I wish some of the sets weren't so skeletal in appearance but they still provided more than enough of a setting. If one can't get past that and requires everything to be realistic, then the whole concept of theater is lost on you.

The recording is awful. Chris' voice has to be the worst theater voice I've heard in awhile. I hope his acting is better.

That live cast recording is a mess. "Maybe" is completely inferior to "Now That I've Seen Her" and a lot of the new revised lyrics are even more bizarre than the lyrics they replace.

"Now That I've Seen Her" is actually one of my favorite songs from the score. I often catch myself humming it. I agree that "Maybe" is greatly inferior. I wanted the live cast recording to be great, and was sadly disappointed by it. Still, I am happy at the prospect of owning a commercially available pro-shot version of this musical.

Yes, I've seen the original many times, in various countries, including the original London production.
What you say about realistic is the other way around. If you go for all these scenes (last night of the world on a black stage) in a minimal setting, like I described, that's is probably more realistic, but the thing is that we want to experience what is in their minds. That is the concept of theatre.

What I'm asking whether you've seen is the revival, not the original.

Yes, 3 times. First at opening night, original cast, then last september with Sooha Kim as Kim and last month with Tanya as Kim (who is a fantastic actress by the way).

Saw this back in September and it was a good show and I liked the set/direction changes from the original (far more than what they did to phantom). My only issue is that I wish two of my favourite characters in the show had better diction (or more accurately, not such thick, hard to understand accents) particularly Thuy. But he and the Engineer had very bad diction.
Putting it into the Imperial is probably a good choice too since the set has alot if focus towards the right (stage Left) so I think it would benefit with a stage opening that is more rectangle than square (as it is in London)
Looking forward to seeing it on DVD (assuming it comes out on DVD and not just a cinema showing)

Of course it will come out on DVD. Cameron Mackintosh knows how to make a buck, and knows that there are enough fans to eat it up.

Is it known which performances were filmed for this? (Or was it really just the 25th anniversary)

The entire 25th anniversary show was filmed. They came back in afterwards to shoot the close-ups

They haven't announced a US screening yet, so no idea, but hopefully they do it soon!

It's coming to Broadway in Spring 2017, probably taking over Broadway from Fiddler.
