You mean..."A Whole New World"??
Yeah, she sang for Mulan. And Harvey was a voice-over both speaking and singing. Donny Osmond sang, too. The three of them in the same show together would be interesting...

Ooooh, I really hope this is true! I always thought Miss Saigon would be just perfect as a film. And if Zhang Ziyi can sing(which I doubt, unless it's Peking Opera style!), she'd be a PERFECT kim. Well, except she's Chinese playing a Vietnamese...remember all the contraversy with her playing a Japanese... Perhaps the producers should just go to Vietnam and audition for a new Kim.
Ragtime as a movie would just be the most amazing thing ever! I never got to see the musical, but ADORE the CD. Please make this into a film too!!

all i can say is if they cast ming na as kim..i would have to kill someone.
so....IF they could sing..who would you want to see in the leading roles?
matt damon would make a cute chris...although what a nice break this would be for will chase! yeah..go for will!
i think on screen lea could still do the role and she is the definitive kim.
i would like to see jonathan pryce in the film.
gigi could be maria carey or beyonce
ellen...hmmm....jessica simpson? can you imagine?! hahaha...
mandy moore?
john...oooooo lots of options here... usher...will smith..

I have been a fan of Miss Saigon for years!
I do hope that the show is made into a movie, to a new audience who would not normally visit west end shows.
If it were, would it be considered another Vietnam war movie or a musical? I believe it would work and that there is a vast potential audience out there who whould appreciate the shows songs, message and stunning visuals in the film medium.
I too see Heaven and Earth as a movie like Miss Saigon. Just imagine the emotional resonance in the audience in scenes such as the evacuation of Saigon, the bar scene and Hotel Room scenes if they were sung in a real movie that someone had realised with their mind.....
Lets hope that Sir Mackintosh is already secretly making plans!

Colin Farrel or even better Ewan Mcgregor who will be in Sunset the Movie as Chris?
Will Smith as John?
Chow Yun Fat as the Engineer?
Nicole Kidman as Ellen?

I hope this film gets made. I hope they don't cut any of the music--just leave it as is besides new orchestrations if needed.
I agree that Ragtime would be great on film. Les Miz would, too. Hoping Spielberg does one of these 3.

Jake Gyllenhaal as Chris? Wasn't he one of the finalists for MOULIN ROUGE? Could be an interesting casting choice.

I was just thinking that!

Posted: 5/8/06 at 11:31pmI think it would be a good movie musical, because of its material. In addition, you don't have to worry about casting one of the major parts; Jonathon Pryce has worked extensively in film, so he could reprise his role as the Engineer and make everyone happy.

LOL - Ten years later ( after this thread was opened)...and there is still no official greenlight for the film adaptation! Will it be announced for filming before the Broadway revival takes place?
But I have seen two production information sites ( Production Weekly and MyEntertainmentWorld) mention current activity on the project. To get more info, one has to subscribe to the sites, though.
Is this going to be a major studio release? Les Miserables was produced and released by Universal Studios ( through its subsidiary Working Title as producers, co-produced with Cameron Mackintosh).
Btw, I saw the original London production a month after it opened in 1989. That was 27 years ago!

If the Bway revival picks up (is successful), I am pretty that would push the movie away at least by a couple more years - they wouldn't risk the loss of revenue on the show because of the movie option. If it's a flop - I don't know how they'd be able to get money for the movie. At the same time, if it's a hit revival, but closes early - it might increase the chances of a movie, because of renewed interest in the material.
Having said that, I'd love for Ellen to be played by Naya Rivera (or she could make us all happy and be Anita in a Broadway revival). She's a great singer and actress, and doesn't get enough credit for it. I like Jake Gyllenhaal for the engineer, but don't think he'll be interested in such a controversial role (racially insensitive cast, etc.).
Kim (sigh), should probably be a new comer to create a good buzz.

I think Jenna Ushkowitz from Glee would be a good choice for Kim

There was a recent report that Danny Boyle is apparently in-talks to direct.

I never have understood how any producer anywhere thinks a successful film will somehow affect the box office of a successful Broadway (or other theatrical) production. They're two completely separate art forms. A successful film adaptation of Wicked won't affect the Broadway production of Wicked. I think it's an idiotic thought.

Exactly, look at Phantom and Les Mis, the movie versions only boosted theatre ticket sales immensely. It is just extra promotion.

Phantom and Les Mis are no where close to being a good comparison. Both movies came out decades after the show was running and successful. People here and elsewhere have argued that Les Miz the movie actually made it possible for the 2014 revival to become successful on Broadway.
If you think of it from a regular buyer's perspective - you wouldn't want to spent Broadway ticket money to see a story you just saw in a movie theater (or can see it) for $10-$20. But if there's sufficient time between two separate mediums - it will almost always benefit both of them.
