Miss Saigon Questions

I just go the Miss Saigon "Highlights Cd" and I love it. I think its great. Just a few questions: I was wondering how the sets were for the show. Also, was this show ever video taped legally? Also, how does the helicopter scene work? Not like technically but in the sense of the story, what song does it happen in ? And another, really random question, what was the show curtain like for this show? thanks.

re: Miss Saigon Questions

The helicopter scene happens in the second act during The Fall of Saigon or as it's often called Kim's Nightmare. A legal video of the show has never been released...yet.

re: Miss Saigon Questions

Oh, I wanna see this show so bad, now. I think out of the 4 mega musicals of the 80s, this is the least popular, but def. my favorite. I actually have never heard of this show, until two years ago.

re: Miss Saigon Questions

Wasn't there a "making of" video that came out? I remember it having a lot of footage from the show in it, including a lot of stuff to do with the set.

re: Miss Saigon Questions

I think (IMHO) that the score is one of the greatest ever written for stage. Unfortuntely due to the subject matter and the devistating ending I think that it isn't as popular as it should be.

Also one of my favorites

re: Miss Saigon Questions

I think I've read that in the Broadway production they actually had a sort of helicopter type set piece, and it always makes me so sad that the tours use a hologram helicopter...although, obviously that's much more practical.

But yeah, this is also one of my favorite shows. Lea Salonga is amazing. I cry if I listen to the entire recording.

re: Miss Saigon Questions

Is the hologram helicopter something recent? I swear when I saw it on tour (1996ish) that there was an actual helicopter on stage.

re: Miss Saigon Questions

Yes, it is. Because you saw the Equity tour -- the current hologram belongs to the non-Eq.

re: Miss Saigon Questions

it is one of the most underrated of the mega-four, yes it had amazing special effects but it's score was superior to cats or phantom in my opinion, schonberg and boublil are amazing together, they compliment each other perfectly. i also have to say that subsequent versions of the show with the new lyrics and changes can possibly also be attributed to it's "demise" i guess you'd say. I saw the show on tour and they had the computerized helicopter and it was still powerful, but I think the London original lyrics probably stood up better.

and there isn't a complete thought in this whole rant. sorry about that!!!

re: Miss Saigon Questions

I really don't think the fact that they changed the finale from a reprise of "I'd Give My Life for You" to "Little God of My Heart" to a reprise of "This is the Hour" was keeping audiences away.

re: Miss Saigon Questions

The Complete Recording has every note and I just LOVE it.

Let's also keep in mind that the design does not equal the musical. It only equals a production of a musical. MISS SAIGON does not inherently have a computerized helicopter.

re: Miss Saigon Questions

Too bad Peter Cousens was recorded at a time when he shouldn't have been. (Pre-rehearsals, even.) Reportedly, he was better live.

The CSR is a great recording of Kevin Gray and Charles Azulay...everyone else? Not so much, IMO.

re: Miss Saigon Questions

Well, yeah, I know that. But I still don't care for him on the CSR, Tony or not.

re: Miss Saigon Questions

Back when the CSR was in planning talks, Michael Ball's name was tossed out as a candidate for Chris. I'd have much preferred him to Cousens.

re: Miss Saigon Questions

Wasn't John Barrowman also considered for the CSR?

I thought Michael Ball was considered for Chris in the OLC, but he decided to do Aspects of Love instead.

re: Miss Saigon Questions

so what recording would you guys suggest? I bought the Highlights becuase it was cheaper and i only wanted to hear "why god why" but after i heard the first notes of "movie in my mind" i knew i was going to love the score. Any yes, is there a "making of" video? Id love to know how to buy it.

re: Miss Saigon Questions

According Theater Week (I miss that magazine) Barrowman actually recorded the tracks for CSR, but they decided to re-record the role. I don't recall hearing a firm reason why Cousens replaced Barrowman. Yeah, I also heard that Michael was offered the OLC but turned it down for Aspects, which was probably a wiser career decision for him. So that makes two Miss Saigon cast recordings that Michael passed on. re: Miss Saigon Questions

re: Miss Saigon Questions

there is a making of video with a lot of footage from the original production including the complete helicopter scene. it's an awesome documentary that unfortunately has not yet been transferred to DVD, but I think you can still buy it on FirstNightRecords.com...

The CD I recommend the most is the complete symphonic recording, simply because they recorded the entire show, it includes the updated lyrics which I prefer to the original and while not everyone surpasses their original cast counterparts the rest of the cast makes up for it - so much so that it's a necessity for any collection. if you must hear both, get the complete symphonic CD along with the London highlights CD. that'll work... re: Miss Saigon Questions

here's the video purchase link...

re: Miss Saigon Questions

RippedMan,
I'd go for the 1995 complete recording. I will be in the minority. I'm sure of that. Everyone else with tell you to buy the OLC but I'm recommending the CSR because you will have the complete score. Once I've heard a score in its entirety,I find it very difficult to go back to an uncomplete recording without feeling cheated. Besides some of my favorite moments of Miss Saigon never made it onto the OLC.
