Hey guys, I am teaching a Gender and Politics in Theatre class this summer and would love to get your opinions on what some good recent plays (written in the last five years or so) that deal with gender, sexuality and political issues. I could possibly include as part of the class. Thanks!

Do you mean gender politics?
Sarah Treem's "The How and The Why."

GOOD PEOPLE has some wonderful takes on class issues, mostly, but politics and gender (and race) all play a part.
THE MOUNTAINTOP also indirectly touches on all of these issues.

The recent Really Really would be a good one to look at- unfortunately, I doubt it'll be published by the summer.
Of those previously mentioned, I'd say Venus in Fur would be the strongest choice in re: gender politics.
Sarah Ruhl's Passion Play. Or In The Next Room. Both deal heavily with gender and sexuality (Passion Play incorporates a bit of politics as well).
Speech & Debate by Stephen Karam touches upon all three topics.
And of course there is Ruined.

Can you make room for a play from 20 years ago?
LOW LEVEL PANIC by English playwright, Clare McIntyre, provoked stronger gender-based reactions than any play I ever taught. Various groups of students produced three or four productions of the play while I was teaching it.
There's nothing in it that isn't still relevant today.
(BTW, it's available in print with another play, MY HEART'S A SUITCASE, and the book is often listed under this other title.)

Posted: 5/6/13 at 7:01pmOLEANNA is to be avoided like the plague, if you ask me. Mamet rigs the "argument" between his characters so the prig of a professor comes to seem reasonable while the young woman turns out to be Psycho-bitch!
