Molly Pope in A Star Is Born at 54 Below/Feinstein's

It wasn't a Broadway show, but since it was at 54 Below which is in the heart of the theater district I felt safe to post about it here. Besides myself and my boyfriend, I was wondering if anyone else from these boards was at the show on Tuesday the 12th? Molly, 3 musicians plus 2 backup singers/dancers put on a really wonderful performance of the songs from the classic Judy Garland film. This wasn't just a performance of songs. Movie dialogue before and after the songs fleshed it out to make it seem like Molly was channeling Vicky Lester/ Mrs. Norman Maine. The performance and dancing at times made it's way off the stage and out into the audience. They used the layout of the club to their advantage. The 'Born In A Trunk' medley was the high point of a really, really magnificent show. You had to be there. It was really special.

It was one of the most exciting cabaret events I have ever attended. In fact, it was one of the most exciting theatrical events I have ever attended, in execution but also in conception.

For those of us who know the film backward and forward, it was pitch perfect, but Molly does not do a Judy Garland imitation. Rather, she has a naturally throbbing belt voice and a sense of drama and dynamics, so she is able to capture startling amounts of Garland-like nuance and subtlety and humor in her vocals. And her delivery of the two monologues at the end (Esther's in the dressing room and Danny's to Esther) capped the evening off in a satisfying emotional way.

Credit should also go to Will Nunziata, who directed it, Brian Nash, the musical director, and Sidney Erik Wright, whose witty and inventive choreography made the tiny 54 Below stage seems like a sound stage at Warner Brothers.

I'm sure she will do it again, and I will definitely go a second time.

I sadly had to miss this. I am a big fan- as well as an acquaintance- of Molly, and I think she is a remarkable performer, wonderfully idiosyncratic and full of star quality that is all-too-rare. I highly recommend that anyone who is able to see her perform does so, whether it be this piece or anything else does.

"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."

Though nothing officially has been confirmed, Lady Gaga is pretty much a lock-in for Bradley Cooper's adaptation of A STAR IS BORN (he's starring as well as making his directorial debut).

Production is slated to begin February 2017.
