Monkey: JTTW

I sat in with a friend in the band on this show a few times last weekend and was really impressed with it. The originality was really refreshing and the show flew by.
The word at the sunday evening performance was that a few big producers where in to see about taking the show on, with rumours of it either back to America, to Beijing or on a UK tour...I wondered if anyone had heard anything about this? A UK tour would be brilliant as I think people really need to see this.

PS - A few of the guys in the band had done some work on Hairspray and were saying that there was talk of it closing in Oct? Im not starting a viscious rumour here or proclaiming to have the inside track, I just wondered if people had heard this or knew anything?

A good friend saw it with her boyfriend. He came out raving about it, she said she was dissapointed and found it a little weird...her boyfriend likes weird things though. She couldn't even describe to me what format it was lol!

What even is Monkey: JTTW?

re: Monkey: JTTW

It's a spectacle show based on Chinese legend and, I believe, influenced stylistically by Chinese opera.

The show is a mixture of songs and dance/acrobatics. The score is really original and features some lovely songs. It also feaures some really unusual instruments, if you are a muso geek like me then you will find this interesting:

Yes, I was surprised at how good it was. Do you think it will find a life after the 02?

re: Monkey: JTTW

I think it will have a life, its already played a few places now

I was so excited when our theatre had the world premiere of it (Manchester Palace), it was a dazzling, inventive, beautiful piece. The music was gorgeous and the wire work and choreography amazing, the sets were great to.
Though certain people who wrote the show could o with learning some manners grrr lol

re: Monkey: JTTW

Treated carefully this could have a great life now its closed at the O2. It could easily tour the country in a modified tent as does that stuff from Montreal!

re: Monkey: JTTW

The tent at the 02 was bought by Damon Albarn I believe? Could that be toured or would a scaled down version be more suitable? I suppose a theatre tour would be the simplest option but some of the crew said that it didnt come over as effectively in the palace as it did at the 02? did anyone see both?

re: Monkey: JTTW

It works really well in a theatre but it is a huge production

re: Monkey: JTTW

Yes, it wasnt the warmest place to be! im sure the bigger houses could accomodate the show as it is, though i thought that it was quite an intimate venue at the 02, even though it could house c. 1000 people.

re: Monkey: JTTW

Certainly, its easy to see the show sit as it is in the big houses of Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Southampton etc.
I honestly think this will be back on stage later this year or early 2010.

re: Monkey: JTTW

Its done stunning business since it opened 3 seeks ago but remember the last 3 weeks have been the school holidays and I would expect it to calm down a little now.
I have been told that it is doing 100 times better than they ever thought it would.
Plays on Sundays too!
