I'm still not getting how "Seasons of Love" was influential in any way.
I would add "I Hope I Get It" from A CHORUS LINE, "Adelaide's Lament" from GUYS & DOLLS and "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught" from SOUTH PACIFIC.

I agree with many said, but, seriously, am I the first to suggest "Don't cry for me Argentina" and "Phantom of the Opera" ????

Posted: 6/19/07 at 11:08pm"Seasons of Love"? It was a popular song, but influential? Same thing goes for "Send in the Clowns", (Which, I must say, is a brilliant song.) "Being Alive" (ditto) , "Tomorrow" (not so much), etc. They're all popular, good (in some cases great) songs, but not influental. The seamless flow of song and dialouge in "Soliloquy" and The Bench Scene in Carousel, the brilliant, original (for its time) theme of "Ol' Man River" in Show Boat, the songs from West Side Story (lyrics for the most part aside)- THOSE ARE INFLUENTIAL.

Posted: 6/19/07 at 11:27pmwell, Being Alive was significant for Sondheim's reputation on Broadway, wasnt it? Maybe not as much as others that have been mentioned

I actually would say "Me and My Town" and "Simple" from ANYONE CAN WHISTLE over any of the other Sondheim numbers that have been mentioned ('cept for the Tonight Quintet). "Rose's Turn" is definitely one of the most influential showtunes, the way Sondheim experimented with Styne's previous tunes and lyrics from other songs, the way he combined all the themes and motifs, it is simply a brilliant breakdown put to song which followed other numbers like "Live, Laugh, Love" from Sondheim and even a number like "Lot's Wife" from the very recent CAROLINE OR CHANGE is clearly modeled after "Rose's Turn."
I second "Sodomy" from HAIR.
