As far as I know, Gower Champion had the curtain up to the knees until after the triple time steps and it has been used in pretty much every subsequent version that had a curtain.
Michael Berresse's dance interlude in The Light in the Piazza.
Watching the Turkey Lurkey Time video on YT, I can say that Donna McKechnie's little dance solo is amazing.

There's one moment that blows away all the others for me. It's in Ragtime when Coalhouse and the ghost of Sarah dance without touching each other after he sings "Sarah Brown Eyes".
It might not be incredible choreography, but it's incredible theater.
"The Dance of Love and Death," i.e. when the blind countess and her gigolo dance, at near the end of Tommy Tune's "Grand Hotel"
I don't care what anyone says,
but the opening dance number from 'The Wedding Singer" was some truly kick butt choreography. I loved it.
People thought the show was crap, but that number was amazing and seriously threw the 80s right in your face.
I can't believe no one has mentioned the Act 1 Finale of "Crazy for You" !!!! The most incredible choreography I've ever seen !!
And also, I simply adore "You Can't Stop the Beat " from Hairspray ! The energy and fun dancing of this number is simply fantastic !!
I am watching GAD right now as I type and so far, I enjoy the gospel song of the "Salvation Army" while preaching on the street about gaining salvation in heaven, the evils of gambling.....
as for a favorite dance moments in a musical....
My favorite is the Jellicle Ball from Cats! I also enjoy the pirouette done by Mr. Mephistopheles ?sp :P

I thought GaD was too gay? I think the movie is a bit of an overblown mess but it has it's moments espcially when shown in widescreen--namely Vivian Blaine recreating her role (even if that new song Pet me Poppa is much worse than Bushell and a Peck) and it has Michael Kidd's wondrously athletic choreography fromt he stage version--like I said on page one the Crap Shoot ballet is perfect
I ahve to agree with Sarah Brown Eyes--when I saw Ragtime (the Vancouver company in 199 I only knew the one disc concept recording and so didn't even know the Sarah Brown Eyes moment was there. Brilliant stuff and I think Graciela Daniels did a lot of great "movement" throughout Ragtime particularly for the blacks.
And Sondheim--totally agreed re Grand Hotel. I saw the tour when I was 10 and from what I remember most about it was it felt like the show never stopped dancing--one thing to the next

Methinks people confuse favourite dance numbers in shows with most memorable/iconic!
Fred and Ginger doing "Never Gonna Dance" in the movie Swing Time. The dance is not cut once untill Rogers starts doing those amazing spins.

Eric mentioned the Somewhere Ballet from WEST SIDE STORY. Seeing the original production on the night following its opening is one the indelible memories that I have. I recall the stunned silence at the end of the Sonmewhere Ballet, followed by a stampede of cheers. Perhaps what makes this ballet stand out, to me, is that it was more traditional in form than the rest of the very wonderful dances, Cool being another favorite.
"Step in Time" - Mary Poppins
"I hope I get it" (the really big music part in the beginning after "5,6,7,8!) - A Chorus Line
"Cool" - West Side Story
"One (finale)" - A Chorus Line (i almost forgot that one) :)
"America" - West Side Story

Fred Astaire and Eleanor Powell dancing to Begin The Beguine in Broadway Melody of 1940. It's simply electrifying.
(Ditto Too Darn Hot, totally disagree that there is anything wrong with the film version of Kate, though. I understand it was changed, and I believe it was for the better. To each his/her own, though! )
