I guess this is an interesting point, but for me I am from the era where I want big splashy sets, to me that IS theatre, to be transformed into another world, (particularly when the ticket price is so high)

Thanks for the answers , that’s the thing remove all the splashy and what your left with is not worth the sum of it parts. Which is a pity. But these producers did the same with King Kong , Strictly Ballroom, sometimes getting the book right is better than splashy

Don't get me wrong I love over the top as much as anyone, but one can only dress mutton up so much.

Just want to make sure I got this right: If you strip away the set, lighting, costumes and any of the other bells and whistles from a show that's designed to be an over-the-top spectacle, then it won't be as strong a show?

My BWW theory holds up.

If you ever want to ruin a show for yourself before seeing it, come to this board. I broke my own rule this time, but I try to avoid these types of threads until after I've seen the show. The amount of bombastic bulls#!t on this board by wannabe actors and/or theater critics is waist deep. Please don't tell me that I'm only going to enjoy a show because of the amount of money I've spent on tickets, or because the set is the only thing the show has going for it, so I'll just ignore and forgive everything else. To suggest that that's the only reason a show will be enjoyed or successful (despite your in-depth analysis and expertise in all things theater), is a pompous and arrogant point of view. And, yes, I know I don't have to click on this thread or give credence to anyone else's opinion, and I usually don't, but there are plenty of theater loving people who come to this board for advice on which shows are worth seeing, who can be influenced and swayed from experiencing what might be for them, a fantastic and memorable night of theater. Not saying that this is that show, since I won't be seeing it until next month, but whether or not it is for me, doesn't mean it won't be for someone else.

If your decision to go and see a show is made because of what someone on a message board says about it, then you're the problem not them x

I already had my rant earlier, but I'll just say it's nice to come here and read people's opinions, good or bad--when they're objective. It gets exhausting when people constantly take heavy-handed cheap shots, (which usually happens with jukebox musicals). The resentment towards anything that's too flashy, too mainstream, too tourist-friendly is a bit much. What's great is that there's something for everyone. Personally, I'm happy to pay the big bucks for a show that's more exciting than anything I've seen in the last five years. Not everyone cares about the Band's Visits or the Come From Aways of the world. Some of us just want to have a fun time.

I wish I was wrong. But plenty of folks on here just don't like JBMs; they don't have to say it explicitly. I can already predict what the TINA preview thread will look like.

Oh, good lord. So WHAT if people don't like jukebox musicals? Do you really think people are spending good money to sit through a show JUST to piss on it? No, they aren't. Additionally, people don't go to see MR expecting to see an original score - are people here (for the most part) tearing the jukebox movie musical apart? NOPE.

I don't like jukebox musicals. I don't like spectacle. I didn't even like the film, MR. But I went to see it in Boston last summer, because I was curious. We enjoyed it so much that having awful seats only made us want to go back to see it again - and we weren't disappointed. We've been looking forward to it opening in NY and have tix to see it again at the end of the month. I hoping I STILL like it, and that I like the changes they've made.

But there are going to be people that don't like it. AND THAT'S OKAY. I prefer conversations that have varying views, and them not liking it has no bearing on my enjoyment. There are people that hate nearly every show: Hamilton, Spring Awakening, Dear Evan Hansen - and it still doesn't matter. I've seen people here have the biggest doubts about shows, casting, etc that STILL go to the theater to HOPEFULLY be proven wrong. Most recently, Jordan (poster here) that has been quite vocal about his dislike for MR from the Boston run - but had mostly positive things to say about the show when he saw it again last week. MANY posters here assumed that The Prom was going to be a piece of crap - and then fell in love with it.

And if Tina gets crappy reviews from the board - so be it. But know, that those people are still putting their money where their mouth is HOPING that the show is great. ME? I won't even be buying a ticket - because I hate bio-jukebox musicals. And that doesn't make me a bad person.
