Mr Baz Luhrmann

Just thought I'd share that he is confirmed to direct the movie of Wicked, what do you all think?

re: Mr Baz Luhrmann

No! No! No! Confirmed where? Please tell me this isn't so. I can't stand Barry Luhrman's work.

re: Mr Baz Luhrmann

Where's that from? Do tell!

'Australia' is opening to horrendous reviews.
This we go thru a rethink me thinks!

re: Mr Baz Luhrmann

For starters it's listed on IMDB, and if you look at who's updated the site lately, you'll see that the only recent updates have been from Universal Pictures, and, although I have not seen them, apparently he has mentioned it in interviews in the last few week!

re: Mr Baz Luhrmann

Hollywood contracts can be torn up pretty quickly in light of a major film failure, ie AUSTRALIA. Let them find a REAL director.

re: Mr Baz Luhrmann

IMDB isnt gospel especially very early on in a pre production stage of either a film or a TV show, but after the worldwide smash they've had with Mamma Mia is doesnt surpise me that Universal are possibly greenlighting this sooner than expected

re: Mr Baz Luhrmann

I mean, I was VERY surprised that Mamma Mia was the biggest selling DVD in UK EVER! And I think production Companies are wanting this success, and I think Wicked will be the next hit, so they will want to get the ball rolling straight away, especially with the current retail market!

Mamma Mia really is the exception to the rule. I cant see another musical selling like that, but if it means that more movie musicals are going inot production because of it, that cant be a bad thing

Two words for Mamma Mia and the reason why it succeeded so well on-screen = It's ABBA!

re: Mr Baz Luhrmann

I dont think its fair to say its opening to horrendous reviews... It has been received as a moderate to good film, just not quite what it was hyped up to be. It think it has got a lot of people quite bemused. One can only hope, if he is directing Wicked, the original creative team will stay very close, and keep a strong guiding hand to ensure the film is true to the show. I think that is what makes Mamma Mia work - admittedly its not the best film in the world, but the sheer enery, and exuberance of it completely captured the essence of the stage show (in my opinion), which is why it has been so successful. By keeping the three women on board, they ensured that the film was faithful to the show.

I did enjoy his Romeo & Juliet very much. Not a Moulin Rouge fan but is very visual, which could do wonders for a film version of Wicked. Being visual that is.

re: Mr Baz Luhrmann

As i've posted on the Broadway thread, I think his style is the only thing that will work for Wicked, without it becoming very cheesy and disney style!

What style?

"'Australia' is opening to horrendous reviews"

Not really -- Rotten Tomatos has it about 50/50. It's #5 on the box office list with $20 million over the five day holiday weekend. I saw the film on Sunday and enjoyed it very much. I thought the performances overall were excellent, and I was sufficently "invested" in the characters to the point where I was in tears near the end. The cinematography is beautiful.

Lousey reviews in Australia for AUSTRALIA. Major criticism for his rewriting of history, the Japanese bombing of Darwin and his interpretation of the "Lost Generation" of Aboriginals. One review I read today said " There were enough cattle stampedes to make you want to call the RSPCA".LOL.

Oh for Gods sake alterego.....just becuase you personally do not like his work, doesn't mean he is a bad director. Idiot.

re: Mr Baz Luhrmann

To be fair, Wicked is closer to Moulin Rouge than anything else Luhrmann has done, Australia in particular - so, saying its totally wrong because of the latter is irrelevant. Most Directors will have their hit and misses.

Wicked will look a lot better in a slightly quirky style, than going down a Disney route which it almost certainly would have done. Making it 'darker', earthier and other worldy will work because it will clearly put a line between the Wizard of Oz and Wicked visually.

Obviously the film won't come out for at least another 5 years, for obvious reasons, but I hope they don't leave it too long because I'm really anxious to see how it all turns out - cast included!

Mamma Mia is strange. I don't understand why and how it is as successful as it is. We know the general public are simple, but REALLY? Abba obviously were huge, the cast was quite star studded (not with today's hot shots though)...and it was easy viewing, but it does baffle me. Biggest selling UK DVD too?!

I guess it falls under the category of making something so non-outstanding that it appeals to the lowest common denominator.

Lets hope Wicked doesn't get the same treatment, contary to popular belief on this site - it really is something special and more importantly different from what has been seen in these parts for a while (movie musicals included).
