My girlfriend got mugged coming out the front door of the Plaza in 1986. It still happens.
I very glad to hear that you are okay and that they caught the jerk. I alittle worried now cause I'm moving to the city in May for a summer long internship. But thanks for the heads up about not showing your ipod of cellphone.
Also I agree with junkyard, don't let the scum get a plea. Make them die in jail
Most theatres will let you exchange your ticket for another showtime if you just let them know what happened.
My friend got her wallet stolen from her purse on the subway as we were on our way to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and she actually missed the show doing the police report thing. Well she went the next day to the box office and they let her exchange her ticket when she told them what happened.
So, go give it a shot. THe worst they could say is no.
Take a police report of the occurance to the box office and give it a try. see if the precinct can specify loss of theater tickets along with other items such as cell phone etc...
I'm just waiting for Munkustrap or someone to yell at her for not using the off topic board or something. hah
This is a good example on how, with the Disneyfication of Times Square and the Theatre District people feel safer and let there guard down. There are still scum sucking a-holes out there ready to rip you off. It is still a good idea to be aware, on guard. Say what you will but talking on cell phones, listening to i Pods etc can take your attention away from the people around you and can make yo a mark for pick pockets and muggers.

Again thanks guys! I just want everyone to be safe because much like everyone else I have never felt anything but safe in the two years I have lived in this area. And I am an adult male so I didn't think I was vulnerable looking I am not a little guy by any means. Anyway, I haven't had a chance to get in touch with the box office with work all day but hopefully I will be able to work something out. I guess it is the least of my worries. I am alive!
That's odd to hear. It it were thirty years ago, we'd probably have 100 threads a day on this sort of thing, but no matter. I'm glad you're safe.

That is terrible! I am glad you are alright.
8th Avenue in the 40s isn't the safest place though. It was a dirty, digusting pit way back when, but it's not all that surprising that if it happened anywhere, it happened there. Back in the day, my wife and I had to walk down 8th Avenue (we ran, actually) for some reason and witnessed someone getting mugged, besides other various sex and drug acts. It was quite common years ago and has since been cleaned a bit, but, I still try to avoid it.

Walking the 'side streets' from 8th to 9th has always scared me. When I went to see Jewtopia afew months ago, we weren't sure where exactly the theatre was but we knew it was on 43rd near 9th. So we mistakingly walked 43rd street from 8th to 9th at about 7:30 at night. Not gonna lie- one of the scariest streets I walked. It was completely dark and there was no one on the street. Walking back to Penn Station, we walked 42nd street to 7th/Broadway.
Thank God your O.K. and your not hurt. Phones and stuff can be replaced, not your life.

About 7 or 8 years ago, I was walking outside the Virgin Records store in Times Square with my mom. We had just bought tickets at TKTS, and we were waiting to meet my dad. A man walked briskly past us with a newspaper in his hand and tried to steal my mom's pocketbook, covering it up with his paper. My mom noticed, though, and kicked him in the crotch, took her pocketbook, and we ran into the store.

Glad that you're OK. I'm there all the time. Working there in the 70s was a lot different. A reminder to never keep your guard down especially with all the electric distractions.
I got mugged going into the box office of Will Rogers many years ago

I am glad you are Ok as well. But honestly stuff like this can happen anywhere at anytime. My aunt was mugged in a suburban mall parking lot at like 6pm in the summer...so the sun was still out...in a small suburban town. Muggings are very very rare in mid-town. I always walk the streets all hours of the day and night and feel 100% safe in my neighborhood (Mid-town theatre district) , but I still always have my guard up and am very aware of my surroundings. And you honestly need to be like that everywhere these days. Not just in big cities. Another friend of mine got her purse stolen in Disney World like 3 months ago at 11am. 8th Ave is amazing and has come long way. But people don't get too worried. Manhattan is still very very very safe! But things will happen, you can't keep all the bad ones out. Just be safe and smart! But I am very happy you are alright! Take care and make sure you get another ticket!! Coram Boy is Great! Best Wishes :)
It could be worse.
You could have been mugged coming out from buying full price tickets to Pirate Queen & the mugger got your tickets for it. It would serve him right.
what if something like that happens to a tourist like me, while I am visiting NYC ? By the time of trial, I will already be back home, thousand miles away. Does that mean the mugger walks ? I always wanted to know the procedure of crimes against tourists and what to do if something happened to me !
I'm not too read up on the laws in NYC, but I grew up in Hawaii, and I can tell you that there tourists are sometimes targeted for the fact that they're tourists, because most criminals bet on the fact that visitors to the state won't return to testify, and so chances of doing time are pretty slim.
But they have supposedly tightened things up, and now in Hawaii a crime against a tourist can result in a federal charge, because targeting tourists threatens 'interstate commerce,' since tourism is Hawaii's commerce and all...
Because suspect Brandon Tisalona, 24, of Kea'au, allegedly assaulted a visitor, and in a separate incident confronted a couple from California, authorities said the case could be pursued as a violation of the Hobbs Act if it can be proven he targeted tourists in crimes that interfered with interstate commerce.
If convicted of robbery under the federal law instead of being prosecuted under state law, Tisalona could face a tougher sentence of up to 20 years in a federal prison, with no chance for parole, said Ron Johnson, major crimes chief for the U.S. attorney's office in Honolulu.
But prosecutors would have to demonstrate the offenses actually stymied interstate commerce, which can be difficult. The U.S. attorney's office declined to accept previous Big Island cases in which tourists were victimized, because the circumstances did not meet the federal requirements.
Assault may be federal case

Thank you Anakela, for being the only one to address my question !
Damn, I miss the old New York when you had to watch your back and the element of danger in the city was palpable, especially walking down the old 42nd Street. I was mugged at knifepoint outside the Shubert Theater the day I moved to New York in the middle of the day, the day after I graduated from high school. It taught me I was now responsible for myself. Boo hoo.
Did Chorus Line just open? Maybe he wanted your ticket.
Bump... what exactly happened good vibrations?? what did the mugger say?

I'm curious as to what happened to, I know you've told the story many times, but I'd like to hear it. I live on forty-seventh between 6th and 7th. I've been walking around that neighborhood at all hours and nothing's ever happened to me, knock on wood.
Although the two times I've been mugged, once in Brooklyn and once was in Queens. I always imagined a Manhattan mugging would be the Big One. Not that I'm looking forward to being mugged again or anything.
yeah me too... im just curious what happened
