It's a very "safe" season but Paul Garman, the long-time head of the organization, is a great businessman who knows how to keep his theatre in the black. No new sets will have to be built and it show already has its built-in audience.
Trying to build new audiences by staging "hip" shows has not proven to be a sound strategy for regional CLO's. MTW staged "In the Heights" and did well in bringing in young demographics. Those young audience members, however, don't come back to see traditional musicals.
"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"
