Quite a random, somewhat useless thread really, however..
A friend and I were racking our brains today to try and figure out what musicals, that were based on movies, have had revivals? We only thought of Ragtime though thought it was based more so on the book and Promises Promises. We were sure there are more, we just couldn't think of them.

Promises, Promises
Sweet Charity
A Little Night Music
42nd Street
Little Shop of Horrors (Kind of, it was deemed a revival by the Tony Committee)
Nine
To name a few.
*Revised to take off La Cage. I forgot that they were unable to secure the rights to the film, as intended, and only settled on having to use the play as source material*

It's also fun to note that there's a Sondheim, a Coleman, a Herman, and a Yeston all in that bunch. Something that people need to remember every time the whole "original" musical debate comes into play. Particularly in response to movies being turned into musicals.
Ragtime is almost soley based on the Book...La Cage was based on the play...you could add Grease to the list since with each revival the show seems look more like the movie thrown on stage, instead of the original musical.

If they ever revive this new Grease, which is apparently licensable, then yes. The 1994 production, while revised, did revisions that existed outside the realm of the film. (i.e. an actual song from the time period was added for Sandy instead of "Hopelessly Devoted" and a megamix was inserted at the end to disguise the absence of "You're The One That I Want")
^The last Broadway revival of Grease was a little more like the movie. That's the only one. The revival before that looked like a neon Saturday morning children's cartoon, and was expressly forbidden to use any of the new songs from the movie, or any elements like using the "T Birds" in place of the Burger Palace Boys.

Can you go into more detail about this? I'm intrigued

Somehow, I got it in my mind that Applause had a revival...
APPLAUSE was done at Encores!, but that isn't a full-scale Broadway revival.
Isn't Applause based more on the movie's source material? I thought the creators were unable to use the movie, until very very late int he creation of the musical, the movie right owners (MGM?) changed their minds, but it was too late to put more of the movie back in. Of course I have little doubt the musical would have never existed without the movie...
The source for "All about Eve" is a short story. Not likely enough material to build a full show on without embellishment...
jv92: thanks that was bugging me.

That's why APPLAUSE did not include the character of Addison DeWitt, the critic. He was not in the original story. He was added for the movie.

Zorba (revival 1983-84 w/Anthony Quinn)
Right. Comden and Greene came up with equivalent characters.
