"The death wasn't a first for the Hotel Carter, a threadbare accommodation that stands as a throwback to Times Square's seedy past.
A clerk at the Carter was charged in 1999 with killing a co-worker with a knife and a hammer during a brawl at the hotel's front desk. A half-undressed woman with her hands tied behind her back was pushed out a window and fell to her death in 1987.
Over the years there have been small fires and arrests. A building engineer was killed during a freak elevator accident in 2005. FBI agents once went to the hotel to rescue a 4-year-old boy who had been kidnapped from a day care center in Connecticut as part of a ransom plot."
I think that's a confirmation that you SHOULDN'T stay there no matter what the price is.

I'm staying at the Park Central with my family.
I've heard good things about Big Apple Hostel, but IDK what their availability is like.

I got a "petite" room at the Paramount Hotel on 46th Street this past weekend for $150. It is only big enough for one person (twin bed), but was one of the better deals I have encountered in NYC. Most often I usually stay at Hotel 41 but they were booked up.

The Paramount does the job if you don't mind your bed being on the floor. I know it is trendy, but that drove me insane!
So, that was the Drowsy Chaperone. Oh, I love it so much. I know it's not a perfect show...but it does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue. Ya know?

I stayed at the Paramount too, it's not bad. Rooms are a bit on the small side, but the hotel's pretty nice. It has a KILLER, awesome, funky lobby. And RIGHT in the heart of the theatre district (W 46th and 8th Ave.)! I loved the location.
Anyone try the pizza place right next door? It has THE BEST pizza I've ever had.

The pizza is good, and it doesn't hurt that Dean and Deluca is attached to the lobby - YUM!

I recommend the Big Apple Hostel. $39 a night, clean, safe, only four beds to a room, and you can't beat the location! (45th btwn 6th and 7th aves).

the only thing that made me rethink the hostel is that i want to not have to worry about my belongings during the day when im at BDC or shows

I stayed at Hotel 31, which I believe is Hotel 17's sister hotel. I don't know if it will be a bit pricey for one person, because it was cheap for us since we split the price among four people. The room was small, but it was enough space, and clean. The floors have shared bathrooms, but if you are lucky enough (like we were), you can book a room with a private bathroom. No one ever seemed to be in the shared bathrooms. I read reviews on a trip advising website, and it seemed to be one of the very few NYC hotels that didn't have roach/rodent/bedbug problems.
The Milford Plaza seemed like a deal too, being close to Times Square and all, but their taxes came out to more for us. Hotel 31 is a very short walk to the 4-5-6 Lexington line subway, so getting to Times Square from there is easy.

Give Priceline a try, for my last two trips. I spent $120.00 a night for two people with private bath. And I stayed at the Hudson Hotel and Jolly Madison Hotel Tower. You don't know where they are going to put you. But you do choose the area of the city. Give it a try, I'll never pay full price again. joe

I give another thumbs up to the Paramount.

I give a thumbs up to the Priceline idea...works very well for me in the winter...summer and fall are a little tougher. Best I've done at this time of year is $140 for the Hudson.

The rooms at the Big Apple Hostel are adequate in size. Some are smaller than others but all have two bunk beds. I have stayed there many times and never felt that my body or possessions weren't safe. They have private rooms there (with shared bath) but it's much more expensive. ($125)
Also, I just looked up the rates and it looks like they've raised them a bit. For the time jeff_thedancer will be in New York a bed in a shared room is $45/night. In general the rates range from $39 (off-peak) to $60 (New Year's Eve).
I know I'm sounding shill-ish but it's my favorite place to stay in NYC because when I stay there I can afford to see more shows but I don't have to sacrifice too much in terms of location, safety, cleanliness etc.
Last summer I thought I had booked a bed at the Big Apple Hostel, got there and well, it turns out I didn't do a very good job making sure all my plans were taken care of (oops!) They were booked for the night that I arrived, so I had to stay at another hostel much farther uptown.....and well let's just say I was glad to move to the Big Apple the next day.
