My Hotel in NY this Summer...Thoughts/concerns?

DO NOT STAY AT THE HOTEL CARTER!
It's in my nabe, and it's a disgusting, not clean flea bag. Not worth any price. Trust me.
Check out 414 Hotel -( http://414hotel.com/) (west46th St.), It's a very small (22 room) excellent small motel in a 4 story bldg., I've been inside and it's great. An undiscovered hidden gem! (Use tripadvisor.com etc. for "research" on any hotels)
Renovated, good perks, on a beautiful theater district side street, 5 minutes from the theaters, and in the middle of restaurant heaven (NINTH AVE).
This place is extremely busy and you have to book very early, cause it's small.

I stayed at Hotel Alexander just recently in a double bed shared bath guestroom.
To be honest, the room was teeny tiny (you could probably fit like about a total of 4 beds in that room and there'd be no more space) but it was worth the price. It's like a block away from the subway, and if you take the 2 Express (or 3) train, it's only two stops away from Times Square and only 10 minutes at the max.
And I just did a search for you and the total was $380.

I've never felt dirtier OR more unsafe in Manhattan than the Hotel Carter. ugh.
You could also try the Pod Hotel....it's on 53rd but on the east side...between 2 & 3rd.
A single is usually UNDER 15O a night and a bunk bed double is just around 150 a night...both with shared baths...but the cleanest I've ever seen.
They have Queens with private baths...but they get more expensive.
Rooms are NOT big...but I'm sure you don't plan on spending too much time in it.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

I've stayed at the Milford Plaza and enjoyed it! I would switch hotels, but your the one with the final decision.
Have a wonderful trip. By the way, I really enjoyed The Battery's Down episode you and your friend acted out!

Hotel 17. It's just a few blocks from Union Square, great neighborhood, close to the Subway and like $150/night for a PRIVATE room (shared bath).

Jeff, there are numerous previous thread on this topic for you to look at, if you do a search on this board: Hotels, Main Board.
Please beware pretty pix on any hotel's website! Even the disgusting ones look good. Research on websites where CURRENT travelers post their actual experiences. Good luck.

If a bed and a bath are all that matters, the Herald Square Hotel on West 31st can be a decent choice. The smallest rooms with bathrooms are true cubbyholes, but they're also $99 a night.

The Milford is clean and has private bathrooms. It also has cheap prices and it is in the heart of the theatre district. It isn't luxury, but you really can't beat the price/location.
So, that was the Drowsy Chaperone. Oh, I love it so much. I know it's not a perfect show...but it does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue. Ya know?

fyi, when that body was found in the Hotel Carter last year all the local papers pretty much rehashed why one should NEVER stay there. Here's one clipping...

I stayed at the POD Hotel in April and it was one of the coolest hotels I have ever stayed at. I stayed in one of the bunk bed rooms and it was so cool. Small, yes, but enough space for what little time I spent there. Each bunk bed had its own TV and everything was so mod. I highly recommend the POD Hotel.

lol, sorry Jeff. :)
One body = ok, I'm sure every hotel has had one body turn up at some point (hmm- or maybe I just watch too much L&O and CSI).
But when a newspaper article glosses over whole sections of crimes with "Over the years there have been small fires and arrests." right between talk of two of many deaths, everyone should be warned not to stay there, even if it does only cost $99/night.
Hotel Carter. *shivers*

Jeff...I hate to nitpick, but these things drive me crazy...
1) may be - As in, "I may be staying at the St. James hotel."
OR (in the case of your post)
2) maybe - As in , "Maybe seeing a dead body will inspire you to write a musical."

Have you checked the Edison? I'm not sure what their rates are now, but I've stayed there and LOVED it.

I love the New York Inns hotel chain. They run three hotels throughout Manhattan - Murray Hill Inn, Union Square Inn and (my person fave) the Amsterdam Inn. You can usually find great deals though the Union Square fills up very quickly.
They have private rooms with private bathroom or they will have a private room with a common bathroom that you share with the people on the floor.
I've also stayed at Hotel Riverside Studios, it's a bit out of the way but they ALWAYS have a room and its very cheap. None of the rooms have private baths so you'll have to share. It's not as nice as the inns I mentioned above but it is very clean, safe and the staff is nice as well.
