Evie: LOL about Kaho Shimada! I couldn't agree more, and I'm still BITTER about the fact that she's on the CSR. What a dumb move. She ruins so much of that recording for me.
Anyway, the Eponine on the Purple cast recording is much better than Kaho! I don't remember their names, but the Purple Fantine :) has a stronger voice than the earlier one too. All around, a much better recording -- and the packaging design is wonderful!
It;s too expensive - one every year I go on a Les Mis CR spree
My phase seems to be about every 6 months. And I agree, those newer Japanese recordings are very expensive. It's just something that I decided that I was officially "collecting," so it allows a little splurge every now and then. :) Only getting one though...I just picked purple randomly.
By the way, for the record...Les Miz was the first Broadway-calibre show I ever saw, although it was a natinoal tour, back in 1990. It was solely responsible for getting me into the whole Broadway thing, and has since remained my absolute favorite. In fact, to me, there's Les Miz and then everything else. It's in a class by itself. :)
I saw Les Mis when I was 5 - my first show.
Followed shortly by HMS Pinafore with John Astin...
Then I saw TLK in its first week (can you believe that? heh)
My les mis obsession is always present, but resurfaces once in a while. I want another les mis book though!

----------Younger Brother,I am with you.
Hahaha
I have a WHOLE wall of les mis that includes:
Signed playbill framed of the last time I saw the show (last week on Bway)
Au Revoir. final performance playbill framed.
Les Mis poster.
Part of the costume (tastles, hat, writing pad) I wore when I performed MotH.
And a "Vin et Bière" sign I made for my production of Les Mis.
Ahh...Les Mis...reminds me of 6th grade where my teacher would play us the 10th anniversary video instead of doing work. LOL.
My favorite recording would have to be when my high school put on a production of it for Mr. Macintosh himself (this happen the year AFTER I graduated and I didn't get to be in it DAMN IT)...but I guess I'm a little partial to this recording lol.
I love the London version the best though...
haha
les mis makes me happy....is that sad?
That's not sad at all...lol...
You know something has an great impact on you if it makes you happy even when we have a little discussion on it :)
Les Miz makes me very happy! I know a lot of people consider it a downer of a show, but I find it very positive and uplifting.
Thenardier, your wall sounds fabulous! Sadly, I don't have much on a wall, but I've got some fun stuff. A very good friend of ours works at Musical Theatre International, and got us into the final (invited) Broadway performance. It was possibly THE most amazing experience ever. Of course, I still have the Playbill and Souvenir Brochure (free, sitting on every seat) along with some balloons and pieces of confetti. My other favorite thing is a program from the original run at the Barbican Theatre. I also have a Japanese souvenir program, an Australian revival, a 10th Anniversary (Broadway), and a program from the pre-Broadway run at the Kennedy Center. Are we bragging here?
You're honestly the first person I've come across who has anything near my Les Miz collection!!
Ha!
Awesome - and you to me.
ALRIGHT - O/T a little
I am floating on cloud 9 - I did a Random google search and found: Иисус Христос Суперзвезда - full CD and lyrics. Translation: Jesus Christ Superstar in Russian (and I found in Spanish).
Anyway - As I am Russian, etc. I am happy as hell!
It doesn't sound bad - the Mary is somewhat annoying - but is growing on me.
I haven't bought a LM cast recording since...1999? But I think I have over a dozen.

Can I ask where people got the purple Japanese CD? I've e-mailed Toho Company in Japan but they tell me that they only ship locally.
Also, there appear to be three other new (ie 2003) releases of the show - one with an orange sleeve, a green one and a light blue one to go with the purple and older red and dark blue ones...
Toho Les Miz CDs...
Colm Wilkinson IS the definitive Jean ValJean.....
Jean: I ordered my purple from Footlight Records in NY. www.footlight.com
They're the best!
Footlight stocked a long list.
Colm Wilkinson is actually not my favorite Valjean. I, at times, prefer Ruy de Blas.
Randal Keith and J. Mark McVey are better, I think.
Glad to see another die-hard fan who DOESN'T prefer Colm! I was beginning to thing I was the only one. Of those that I've seen, my favorites are Ivan Rutherford and William Solo. Of the recorded Valjean's, I'll take Robert Marien or Hans Peter Jansen.
Yeah, I mean, he's good - but annoying after a while.
And I feel I'm the only one who doesn't like the OLC - I mean, the first beats of music alone turned me off.
Nope, you're not alone there either. The OLC has its good points -- I love Patti as Fantine and Roger Allam's Javert -- but I firmly believe that there is no truly satisfying English-language recording of the show. I usually end up listening to the CSR, just for the completeness, and I enjoy the men on it, but Paris had the best overall cast, I think.
As for Colm, he's ok on the OLC, but just gets more charicature-ish as the years go on. By the time of the TAC, it's pretty painful. :)
I don't care for the Enjolras on the Paris recording though.
I haven't listened to Les Mis straight through in a while.
You're right about the Enjolras on the Paris recording -- he's not the best. Actually, the Cosette is dreadful too. Sounds like she's falling asleep.
BUT, other than that, it's perfect!
Yes.
But I think lyricly, it's my favorite MotH - it is so different from the other versions.
I really like the Israeli Thenardiers....
Madrid, cast wise, is pretty solid too.
Gotta listen to the Israeli CR again -- don't remember it too well!
