My Life With Albertine

Did anyone see this? It's totally a guilty pleasure of mine. Just some gorgeous music. And I wonder why Gordon hasn't written any other musicals.

Why a guilty pleasure?

Yeah, some of the music is really good!

I saw it. Yes, some of the music is quite lovely, and the original production had several good performances. But it didn't work as a show. Dead boring.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I have never been able to get through the cast recording. One of the most boring scores I've ever tried to listen to. I can't imagine how the cast manage to stay awake to sing it.

I Very much enjoyed the show. Balbec by the Sea" is one I particularly liked and I esp liked Brent Carver and it was my 1st time seeing Chad Kimball. I liked the concept of the staging more than the execution.

I would have liked to see it worked on more Didn't quite gell but I felt it was ore a work in progress- then didn't progress.

I made a trip to NYC just to see that show at PH. I still enjoy listening to the CD, but as others have mentioned, it just didn't quite work as entertainment. (Proust? Crazy! Then again, the same could be said for War & Peace before Great Comet, and Moby Dick became one of the best operas I have ever seen.) However, I loved seeing Brent Carver and Kelli O'Hara in that small space. My favorite numbers are probably "I Need Me a Girl" and "Song of Solitude."

I guess "guilty pleasure" insinuates that I'm embarrassed. But I actually think it's a really lovely score. "Is It Too Late?" Is probably one of the prettiest musical theater songs I've heard in my life. Just curious about the general reaction.
