It was my first time. Ohh my god. The experiance just makes me see how much Michigan really does suck. Mind you, these were my first six shows I had ever seen.
I saw six shows, total.
Forbidden Broadway, an off-broadway show was first. I loved it. It was in the Douglas Fairbanks Theatre which is quite small... making it feel so much more personal. The jokes making fun of other shows were hilarious, at least... the ones that I understood. I just wish I knew more shows so I could've understood all of the jokes. Cheap tickets, too, got great seats the day of the performance.
Next was Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. I was SO glad I saw this... Norbert Leo Butz and Sherie Rene Scott together, I loved it. The lyrics were horrible... but I enjoyed myself. When we got the tickets, they told us we were going to be far away in the Imperial Theatre... but we were pretty high up with a great view. I guess it was just my opinion.
After that, we saw Democracy, a play. I found it boring. It didn't interest me at all... and I just got annoyed whenever the main role lit up to smoke. Also, too long. Ohh well, I guess you can't like everything you see, when you go in almost blindly. My friend and I were basically the only two people under the age of 20. In fact, I'm probably correct by assuming we were the only ones under the age of 30. Definately an older audiance show. The audiance of the Brooks Atkinson was pretty bare, also... I'm guessing it's not a popular show.
Take Democracy's complete opposite, and you'll have Altar Boyz. I went in only knowing that it was in Dodger Stages... the same place BARE was. Because I loved BARE, I had high hopes... and they were met instantly. I was laughing the whole time. It was an intimate audiance, and the five wonderfully talented performers worked the stage like no show I had ever seen. On top of that, the guy who played Mark, I SWEAR I saw earlier in the streets of NY. I loved it. A blast!
The next day we went to Nederlander Theatre to enter the raffle for RENT front two row tickets. My friend's mom won the two tickets, and so my friend and I were in the front row center seats for RENT... for only 20 bucks. Talk about a deal. Great show, even though I didn't really like Roger. Collins was excellent, same with Angel. I almost cried twice. Not to say the beginning I thought was shakey... but it came together greatly.
Our last show was Hairspray. The audiance... dear lord. I could tell it was a bunch of schools on Spring Break or something. They would laugh or clap at anything. Stupid things. But the show was cute. It had it's moments. Not to say it was anything great... but I had fun.
From favorite to least favorite:
Altar Boyz
RENT
Forbidden Broadway
Hairspray
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Democracy

glad you had fun! You saw some great shows! Who played Roger when you saw RENT?
Cary Shields played Roger. I've heard good things about him in the past, it might have just been a... bad day?
That's so weird...Cary is one of my favorite rogers...must have been an off day....

Drew wouldn't have been Roger anyway.
Oops. You're right, I got confused.

When I saw Cary last weekend I thought he was great although you're right it might have been an off night. Everybody has them. When I saw Rent everyone says kelly karbacz(spelling?) who played Maureen was great but she wasn't amazing when i saw her.
ikm, the maureen wasnt amazing because you didnt see:

Caren Lyn Manuel

Yes, Kelly.
I agree with you about DEMOCRACY - I think it's a very very well written show, but it bored me to tears. I think it's a terrible production of a great play - I would like to see a different cast as well.
I'm not sure how much a new cast would help... :-p

People have different opinions. Just because someone doesn't like someone you do doesn't mean that performer was having an off-night. There's just different things that people like about performers.
I enjoyed reading your opinions on the shows! I'm interested that you found DRS to be your second least favorite show. It didn't completely thrill me either, though I did enjoy it.

My first trip to NY was amazing. I'll definately remember it forever. I'm sure you'll remember yours too!
Glad you had fun. Sorry you didn't see Jeremey Kushnier as Roger who (IMO has an orgasmic voice). He was fabulous in Aida.

Glad that you had a good time!
But please... it's a pet peeve of mine: it's AltAr Boyz, not AltEr Boyz. Sorry, I know that sounds kinda bitchy, but can you edit the title?
Hey Buttons! also glad you enjoyed yourself so much!! spread the Altar Boyz love! Word. (woo top of your list!)
Sorry, Elizabeth!
And no, every seat in Forbidden B'way is great... that is, until they move to the new theatre. I'm not sure about that theatre, but as far as this one goes, every seat is great.
Kelly wasn't that great when i saw her...she seemed to be trying to hard..and i saw Karmine as Mimi---AMAZING...i find it hard to believe Cary shield has "off days" he is AWESOME!!!
The only mistake you made was seeing FB first.
You should save the best for last.
Glad you had fun. Forbidden Broadway is the best, but it really is funny when you see everything.
Which I do.
Hey there Bubblestheclown!
I'm glad that you had so much fun in NYC. I'm going there for my second time in July. I hope to see Hairspray, Spamalot, Rent, and Forbidden Broadway.
What else did you do in NYC? Did you see any museums or anything like that?
your twin,
jera
I still want to see SPAMALOT. What a pain it is to get tickets to that show.
Pisses me off!
