This afternoon I had the honor of witnessing Irena's Vow at the Walter Kerr. I cannot put into words how much this show impacted me. To start out, I got a front row ticket on the aisle, the stage was a little below eye level so that didn't get in way at all. I must say, that this story is one that must be seen. Never in my life have I seen anything on stage that was so life affirming, so, reassuring that within bad, good can be found.
It was a thrill to see Tova perform the role of Irena right in front of me. And, to see the wonderful cast do the same. I feel that because I was seeing this amazing cast perform right in front of me from the front row, that I got an additional thrill that I might not have gotten had I been sitting a few rows back.
At the end of the show, Tova pointed out that both James Nederlander one of the producers and the playwright Dan Gordon were in the audience. And, after she did that, she brought out Irena's daughter to answer any questions. I asked how the story got to the stage.
But, what really touched me the most was this. After the Q&A session Maja C. Wampuszyc shook my hand from the stage and said to me" thank you for coming." Now, I have been to the theatre many times. But, this is the first time that anyone is the cast of any show thanked me for being there. I honestly feel that in my heart of hearts that the cast feels the need for this story to be out there and to be heard. and I encourage all of you who haven't seen it, to go to the Walter Kerr, and see the most amazing story onstage that you will ever see.
As I said on this board yesterday, it is so thrilling to know that all BroadwayWorlders are uniting and raving about this show. Tovah's performance needs to be seen to be believed...perfection. The show itself is outstanding. I can't wait to read the rave reviews. So glad you loved the show and had that moment with Maja at the end...
yeah, I am really upset I will probably never get to see this. I know this sounds bad, but I love this time period. It is always so emotionally captivating and enthralling.
Pianolin, do whatever you can to make it to New York and see this show...you will regret it otherwise. Definitely the best show on Broadway right now.
Thanks to all the amazing comments here, I cannot wait to be able to see this...finding the time is another problem entirely!
Too many shows, too little time! (And wasn't it only 2 months ago we were lamenting the closing of too many shows????)
Great review. Thanks for going to the theatre! Now you've heard it twice =)
I was in the front row at the Saturday matinee and asked the same question during the Q&A. I share your appreciation for the show and Tovah's performance.
Also, I did this on another thread, but I think it bears repeating. I want to thank all those who are raving about this show. Frankly, I don't know that I would have sought it out without all the praise here.
madbrian, I remembered, only after I asked it that you asked the same question as me. Believe it or not, I was too awe struck at what I had just witnessed on stage to even remember. Besides, I felt like I had to ask a question considering that i was right in the front row. It would have felt like too good a chance to pass up.
