Well, saw this brand new show around 1 1/2 wks ago and all I can is... WOW! It's an AMAZING show!
I haven't seen the film in ages so I can't really exactly remember what it's about and the musical's storyline is quite solid! There are some changes here and there after I watched the film last night but it was fine, they were great changes!
The set was fine at first... I wasn't overly impressed at start but then near the end of Act 1 during the 'Take Me To Heaven Reprise' scene, that set was AMAZING. The lighting & costumes were both great.
The music... it's Alan Menken! how can it go wrong?! it's every part as enjoyable and fun as any other works that we're familiar with! Quite a few catchy tunes like 'Raise Your Voice' and 'Take Me To Heaven' and 'Fabulous Baby!' (all sung by Deloris) and some really touching & haunting tunes sung like 'Here Within These Walls' (sung by Mother Superior) and 'The Life I Never Led' (sung by Mary Robert)
Now now now, the cast! The cast's the GEM of the show! truly! Patina Miller BLEWWWWWWWWWWWW me away! She makes those high notes & riffs sound sooo super ultra easy and she can just go higher n higher n higher! her portrayal was different to Whoopi's but it was sexy and sassy! It's guaranteed she'll be nominated for awards and actually win quite a few as well!
The supporting cast like Sheila Hancock as Mother Superior, so subtle and humorous! Julia Sutton as Mary Lazarus stole the show for me! Claire Greenway as Mary Patrick as well! Both of them were sooo hilarious! Some hilarious scenes from the gangsters and also Eddie were all great too.
I can rave about this show all night... it was every second of it super fun! go watch it if you can!
I really enjoyed the show, so I drew one of my caricatures of the amazing Patina... tell me what you guys think! hope to give it to her next week!

If people have split views about your work, I think it's flattering. I'd rather have them feel something about it than dismiss it.

It could be the Little Mermaid's new material, so the threshold for "going wrong" is certainly there. Glad you enjoyed the show, sounds like a lot of fun and great sketch.

Posted: 6/2/09 at 11:59amI saw a clip on The View this morning and the show does look like fun! It opens tonight in London. Hopefully more reviews will come in. I hope it does well enough to come to Broadway as I did enjoy the movie.

Posted: 6/2/09 at 12:55pmI was just going to say, as already mentioned, that they showed a clip on The View today. Whoopi is currently in London for it. I have never seen the first movie, but I can't wait to see how the show turns out and am hoping for a Broadway transfer.

I am sooo excited about this! It's one of my favorite movies and I always thought that it was translate well onto the stage. I just wish they didn't cut 'Hail Holy Queen' and all of the other numbers from the film.
