Are the NBC live recordings ever edited? Is it for a private audience or is it something you could buy tickets for? I've always wondered this.

A couple of the NBC live musicals have had minor edits on their home video DVD and/or digital releases. Cannot think of a specific moment at the top of my head, but I remember it was noticed... they used a dress rehearsal cut of a song in something instead of the one from the actual live special where there may have been a tech mishap of some sort. And if you look early enough in advance, free tickets are usually available online for the live studio audiences. It was a source like 1iota or some other provider.

Hopefully they edited the flying sequence in PETER PAN LIVE! During the telecast the flying rigs got tangled and the four actors did nothing more than hang there staring at each other while the music soared.
It was a dreadful production that was made even worse by this glitch.

If I remember correctly they edited Glinda’s song in THE WIZ as it was a lacklustre performance during the show.

Yes, all of these live musical events have some form of re-editing and polishing up post-live broadcast. The re-airing/streaming versions use these fixed versions.
Tickets are issued via a lottery so it’s not first-come-first-serve. You can apply for tickets when they become available but there’s no guarantee you will get one. Tickets are made available for the filmed dress rehearsal and the live broadcast performance and you are notified if you won tickets 1-2 days prior so unless you live by the filming soundstages, don’t even bother.

I've seen various shows on papering and seatfiller sites.
