I think Baz Luhrman would have been a better choice to do a RENT movie. At least he knows what the word "edgy" means. I'm a big Harry Potter geek (see my avatar) but I think Chris Columbus made the world JK Rowling created a little too cleaned-up. RENT is not the type of story that can be softened around the edges, or else the story is ruined. Also, I don't think that members of any boy band belong in musical theater. Justin Timberlake=bad singer. The rest of NSYNC=bad singers. Backstreet Boys--well, you get the point.
Although...if they must cast a pop star, my vote goes to Christina Aguilera as Maureen. The girl can sing. If Britney Spears is cast in any role, however small, I will vomit all over my keyboard.
If Britney is cast, I will see the movie and probably be disgusted with it. He said he was gonna screen everybody though so maybe Broadway people will come in, kick some ass, and then get cast...then we'd just have to worry about the story. As much as I love Rent I'm pretty sure this movie will flop.
I think JT might be good. But I think they should try to get some of the peeps who have played it on Bway to be in the movie.
I've been saying it all along: Beyonce would be a great Mimi. She's got the right look, she's sexy, and could certainly kick the sh*t out of "Out Tonight". She even sounds better live than on record.
Beyonce's voice is too pretty to be Mimi, imho. And do we know for sure which part Justin wants? They say that it is a part for a "pop star" who can sing. I would say that is Mark, since Roger would be described as a "rock star" who can sing. No?
Excited if JT gets it any other pop stars--as long as they can sing and act it.
I like Justin, so I don't think it's a bad idea to cast him in the movie ! He can sing, he is gorgeous and he has a fan base which will help the film !
Take care
Ok guys, who's protesting with me? Get out the cardboard and paint!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....!!!!
Die Chris Columbus.
Is there anywhere I can email to protest the shame? I despise and loathe this. I was willing to give Columbus the benefit of the doubt, but no. JT doesn't have the edge. Can you imagine what he'll do to One Song Glory? It'll be full of cheesy pop riffs and... ick. Oh dear Lord. For the sake of all things holy, please, don't let this be true. I'd rather Rent dissapear from stage and screen forever than to have it immortalized this way. Oh no. I have to go cry now.
Hey, insomniak - Show me a piece of information that said that Timberlake was actually cast in the film and that he was cast in the role of Roger and I'll join your protest.
You guys just don't get it yet do you? This movie isn't even in preproduction. There has been no casting. They haven't chosen a costume designer, set designer ANYTHING. All they have is yet ANOTHER director attached to the project. How about everyone waits until the contracts are signed and the actors go into rehearsal before you start hoping people die. Get a grip, guys.

Gee, if you're this melodramatic over a piece of gossip, I'd hate to see your reaction when stuff like this is formally announced.

I am happier about Justin Timberlake than I am about Chris Columbus. The movie could fly with JT.It can't with Columbus. And San rancisco?!?Good GOD!

Don't panic. When a movie is in development, all the rumors are just that- rumors. Even if they say they're "in talks" it means absolutely nothing. Heck, even if an actor is hired things might change because of scheduling conflicts, injuries, or personality problems.
Hang around movie rumor sites long enough, and you'll realize that 90% of pre-production rumors mean nothing. Sure, they say Timberlake will have a role, but they were also saying for ages that the Phantom would be played by either Antonio Banderas or Hugh Jackman. And Richard Gere was at least the 5th actor approached to play Billy Flynn.
This story actually has a quote from Columbus, which makes it slightly more credible, but I wouldn't be sure of a thing (including Columbus directing) until they actually start filming, or at least set a production schedule and location(s).
You're acting like comic fanboys before the first X-Men came out. How entertaining. :)

Matt_G - I said, "please don't let it be true." I didn't say it was. No flames, please.
Yeah, I'm melodramatic about this. I admit. I just can't stand the idea of this being ruined... Jonathan worked 15 years on Rent and I'd hate to see it all go to waste because the movie was carelessly made or too focused on selling tickets to stay true to the original.
The people who are posting about this are just so overly dramatic it's ridiculous. No matter how the movie made there are going to be people who don't like it. If it stars Justine Timberlake, Christina Agulera, Britney Spears and Lil' Kim and 50 Cent, some are going to love it others are going to hate it. The same if they were to use the complete OBC.
There's no way to please everyone with this. They're going to make the movie the way THEY want to. NOT the way some Rent Heads want it made. Just wait for it to come out so you can see it before you start wishing people would die over something as stupid as a film.
And isn't Chris Columbus that crappy director of the first two Harry Potter movies? Maybe if the 3rd comse out so much better, Rent people will dump him and find someone better? Baz Lurhman would be a nice bet. How awesome would he make it? His vision is incredible, not to mention his set ideas would fit perfectly. Baz...*sobsob* Please, Baz, get this back from Crap Columbus.
Chris Columbus did not direct the third HARRY POTTER film.

I want Justin Timberlake to be in Rent so much - he will be perfect. As will Beyonce. If this movie is to be widely distributed then these two are increasing the chances by about 90%. Plus.. think of the Oscars! Lol. "and the winner is.."
I just remember the wonders of Chris Columbus with Home Alone and Mrs Doubtfire - two great classic movies. But about as far away from Rent as you could possibly get.

Why are they going to cast a bunch of pop idols, when they should be looking for talent who can sing as well as act. Why not use some of the talent already being showcased in the show? You can add a few...one MAYBE two pop names. I think filling the cast chock full of pop stars would kill the plot and lesson the meaning behind the show. The movie would probably sell just as well and would not be so overwhelming with pop's top famous. There is so much talent in and around the show already...past and present casts.... use some of them. Like Maggie would make a better Maureen than Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson anyday. JUST PLEASE DON'T MAKE A MOCKERY OF THE SHOW .

Look, I can almost guarantee that the cast (if this movie gets made at all, which is still in doubt) won't be entirely made up of famous pop stars. You know why? It's simple: It would just cost too much money. Movie musicals, even post-Chicago are considered a risky venture, and studios aren't about to spend $60 million or more on a movie of Rent. So rest assured that at the very least, some of the pop stars will be B-list. :)

"Chris Columbus did not direct the third HARRY POTTER film."
I think Gypsy2 knew that, and was saying that if the third Harry Potter is much better with a different director than the other two were with Chris Columbus, they will see that they should get somebody better.
Or I'm just giving Gypsy2 way too much credit.
Thank you Governor. Yes, I know Chris isn't directing Harry Potter 3 - that's why it's going to be so much better. I think the only reason people over the age of ten saw the first two was because it was harry potter and it was exciting. People might actually see this third one because its a GOOD movie. Rent...might just suck.
