let's prey this doesn't happen:
The Horror of it All

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
		     			Yawn.
New variation on old rumor.

And this surprises you because...? It is bound to happen, Beyonce as Mimi anyone?
How can anyone think this is surprising? There's a basic Hollywood logic to shoving in popstars, and it all has to do with box office. I would be startled to hear otherwise. Didn't anyone realize this particular possibility, once a mainstream craftsman like Chris -- "Harry Potter" by the numbers -- Columbus signed on? It's not gonna be the same film Spike might've made.
I'm no JT fan...but he's a better choice than a LOT of pop stars that are inevitably going to pop up in talks.
And besides, which role? Roger? That would be a mistake but he could certainly do Mark.

and so it will be done!
Timberlake will be Roger!
MY WEEKEND IS MADE!!! This is the HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE!
Thank you my sweet GOD!! Thank you!!!
I'm sure there will be small little roles for small little Broadway performers so don't fret...but when one needs to fill a 60 foot screen....well...

I personally don't even think this is such a bad idea. They are obviously going to use big stars in the roles, and at least Justin can sing. I won't be suprised if he can act as well. I am not a huge fan of his kind of music, but he certainly is talented. Much more so than some of the people I've seen in RENT on Broadway!
We shall see.

At least it's not Justin Guarini!
Just as long as we don't stick Clay Aiken and Rueben Whatever-his-name-is as Angel and Collins.
And now that I think about that, it doesn't sound horribly miscast.

The good news: He can't possibly be a worse actor than Adam Pascal.
The bad news: his voice is too light - Roger needs a little edge - that rock 'n' roll growl.

Clay and Ruben would be good as Angel and Collins! (What, they would, STOP LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT!
) JT might be a good Mark, but Roger...I'm not sure. Oh well, they screwed the movie up when the got Mr. 'Home Alone' to direct it.

JT isn't dorky enough to be Mark. Nor is he tough enough to be Roger.
Now, if we add a prologue in which Roger gets permanent testicle damage, causing his voice to reach the octaves of a pre-pubescent boy, THEN maybe we can stick JT in the role.

Can't say I'm surprised by this at all. I'm just waiting for them to announce the rest of the considerations. I can see it now...Christina Aguilara as Mimi (at least she can sing) and Jessica Simpson as Maureen. Why Chris Columbus.....why.....
This was all hysterical until we mentioned Jessica Simpson as Maureen.
And now it just hurts, because I know that's what's gonna wind up happened.

I'm just grateful that people besides rentheads may actually see a new musical film!
This movie sounds like it will be one of those MTV style movies...especially if Timberlake gets the role. Im surprised MTV itself is not distributing it or producing it.
This makes me sad.
Yeah, I read that about nine months ago.... I don't know how I feel about this.... part of me doesn't like the new movie musicals anyway.... Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Chicago, it's just.... everything is becoming technological and its all about the visuals... I don't know... that's why I always liked the theater, they only created what was real...
Man, could you imagine what they'd do to Chicago if they released it NOW?
*shudder*

I have one word to say: Yuck.
But I knew about this already. This is kind of old news. But I just hope to god it doesn't happen. But I mean- they might as well get Joey to play mark, and Chris whatever-his-name could play Angel and Lance and JC could be as Paul, Gordon, and others. Yea- they might as well get Christina Aguilera as Maureen and Beyonce as Mimi.

Man, you guys don't read too carefully. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE IS IN TALKS TO BE IN THE FILM VERSION OF RENT. He's only in talks. That could mean some journalist saw Timberlake & Columbus taking a piss next to each other in the bathroom and Timberlake was talking about how much he pays in Rent.
Nothing is set in stone. And I've said it once and I'll say it again. Chris Columbus, while he might not be my first choice to direct this film has always been faithful the the genre of film he is working on, going so far as to fight the studio with Harry Potter (the same studio doing RENT) to keep it longer and more like the source material. Let's just wait and see what happens. We all might be pleasantly surprised.

What the RENT movie needs most of all is a writer. Jonathan Larson never really finished it, wondeful as it is as a whole, and the 2nd act, despite the good tunes, is a bit of a structural mess. The story is tight in act one, since it's all one night. But then it runs out of gas. Getting that into story form -- finding beat-by-beat reality in that wash of death and redemption -- will require a damned good screenplay. The movie of HAIR was in development for years, and ended up almost working, but only almost. I think RENT has some of the HAIR problems. You buy the diffused focus on stage, but in a movie, it could lack momentum. Also, Mimi's final "twist" could look ludicrous and make Puccini look like realism in comparison.
Wouldn't Baz L been interesting??
