I can't get over how ridiculous of a stunt this is. This show is going to have zero time to get the public hyped up and to sell pre-tickets. They are rushing things just to catch the eye of the tony committee, when they don't realize that they chose to do this with the worst possible timing.
A) There Will Be Hardly Any Time For Pre-Sales
B) There Will Be Hardly Any Time To Get The Public Hyped
C) The Economy is Still ugly, and it's Going To Hurt This Show
D) A) + B)= Disaster
E) A) + B) + C)= MAJOR DISASTER
This is going to fall flat on there faces.

Does this mean Aaron Tveit won't be doing CMIYC this summer?
I agree, AndAllThatJazz, and it's funny how people think Alice's name is on the Tony already. The award is still Allison Janney's to lose.
Someone hasn't seen Alice in this show clearly.

ok, since they are closing the balcony, this will change the amount of seats obviously, yet they are paying full rent. wouldn't this be a slightly bad thing?
But they will need less ushers, and their % capacity will appear higher.
it might APPEAR higher but that doesn't mean anything when it comes to dollars and cents, my friend.
but thats exactly my point, it will just APPEAR higher... but that doesn't change their potential income
"Someone hasn't seen Alice in this show clearly."
Wrong. Saw her three times, actually. I love the show. I wish the team were smarter and would take it in next season when they'd have better chances at awards, and maybe we'd be in a better state economically/as a nation so the show would stand better chances at success.
I also saw Allison Janney, and she absolutely blew my mind. Someone CLEARLY hasn't seen Allison in 9 to 5. :) It ain't just another musical comedy, folks.

The Times pointed out that, even with a larger capacity, the Longacre is actually cheaper to rent than many other smaller theatres in more desirable locations (45th-46th streets). So they're not losing too much money.
Also in this economy where theatre owners are not making any money keeping a theatre dark might be more willing to lower the rent and change their usual deals to know the will at least have an income.
I am very excited for this! Haven't seen it yet, but heard great things!!
Is Aaron out of Catch Me if You Can? wonder how that will work out...
AndAllThatJazz - you made some very good points about the financing and the economy... I wish it the best, but yes it is def working against the current. Snagging a bunch of Tonys would be the best way to ensure a successful run, so we'll see.
Very interesting news to the theatre world!
Alice is a revelation in the role.
Janney is funny and...well...Janney.
Ripley will win. And deservedly so. And can we be positive about this show before taking a giant sh*t on its parade. Everyone and their mother was convinced SPRING AWAKENING would be a huge flop. And that SHREK would be a huge hit. And, granted, SA wasn't opening during an economic recession but...
Well...you just really never know.

I wouldn't count your Tony's before they're awarded. I've heard that schtick before. With Raul Esparza, Bernadette Peters, etc. etc. Janney has nothing to worry about. Next to Normal is an overrated melodrama which portrays mental illness in a very irresponsible way. It has a great score and a great cast, but that does not a great show make.
Great News! I'm really excited to hear more about this show. At least there is one more musical in the season.

you may want to take your own advice.
Okay, BREATHE, people!
Gosta grow up!

I'm not certain Janney will win at all. I'd like her to, because out of the performances I've seen (including Alice Ripley's), I think hers is the most interesting and the most impressive, and certainly the most surprising. I think it's laughable how many N2N fans have basically engraved the statue for Alice already.
But really, Allison has nothing to worry about. 9 to 5 is going to run for a long time, and she will get wonderful reviews, award or no award. I'm satisfied that I will be able to enjoy her performance for long after Next to Normal has closed.
yeah, we'll see after Brantley sticks knife in 9to5 and twists it.
"yeah, we'll see after Brantley sticks knife in 9to5 and twists it."
You clearly have not seen 9 to 5. :)
I'm sure it cute and fluffy and the girls give admirable performances, but really, 9 to 5? what's it gonna bring to the table we haven't seen before?

What's wrong with putting on a solid, good show? 9 to 5 has an amazing score written by a true American legend, the wittiest book that I've seen in years, and has one of the most attractive, talented casts ever. There's so many reasons to reward that. It's more than just fluff. In this economic climate, it's a show for the middle class, for people working day jobs who aren't quite where they wanted to be. It's more than just a girl power show, it's more than just fluff and cuteness, it's a show that hits an important chord with so many people now. It's more relevant than ever, and I think that's going to pay off for them in the long run. There seems to be this idea that because something is a musical comedy, it's not as "important" as other shows, and I think that's silly.
